I am also going for this convertion.
Have all the plumbing just need a mixer and tank.
Was think of an impco duel fuel mixer but the shop down here in CR has this italian alum donut with injectors. really simple looking thing. Almost too simple!
I stopped by last week and he said a $100 and I could buy one.
They want to install the whole system for a couple hundred.
He garantees the preformance or my $ back and they will uninstall it.
The mixer is made by Roma.
Not sure if anyone has heard of this? if so let me know.
Can't find jack on the net about it.
Will fit on the top of my stock carb and just have to raise the stock aircleaner a couple inches max. they said.
I will do this in the new year once I get more info on this roma mixer.
I want to be sure it will preform or I will go with the impco 300.
They say it is 40% cheaper to run this here in Central America then regular fuel.
The only pitfall is finding a place to fill.
Will make a transfer hose up and any corner store has Propane in BBQ tanks.
This is the main cooking fuel here.
Or just run gas when I can't find the LPG.

Glad I saw this thread.
Great info.

anybody run this setup on a DD? im not interested in doing it for my rig but my dads looking for a cruiser that wont be seeing the same amount of mods mine will...basicly what i wanna know is if this swap is worth it for a DD

I ran my fj45 for a number of years (and the PO before that) as a daily driver on a dedicated propane system. I have nothing but good things to say about it.
I never experienced any valve sticking problem on long trips. And the only reason its not a daily driver anymore, is that lots of other things on the truck need major attention, but not the propane system.
The 2f was starting to burn/blow by a lot of blue smoke towards when it last ran, I dont know if the exhaust seats were hardened, I suspect not.

Now if you could only keep the rest of that rig in shape... see you on the snow run!

;p It doesn't have steering at the moment. Getting the pitman arm reamed to the size of a FZJ80 tie rod end and the p/s box is getting sent to West Texas for a rebuild and port for hydro.

If you tune it right you only lose roughly 1mpg doing the conversion. I would hold a bigger tank than a 10 gallon fork lift tank for a DD. Or you just mount two 10 gallon tanks for 20 total.

I'm running one of these - works well.

Check the ID of it - mine was seriously restricting the air flow into the carb - I turned out about 4mm off the id to give the same area as the two barrels - runs much better and revs properly again...

hmm...good to know, knowing me and my dad we would probably end up throwing somthing reasonably big as far as a tank on it....think we even got a 100lb tank kicken around at home...that might be overkill though...thanks

I am still amazed that you used me as a good example :D

what was he thinken eh? tryen to steer the rest of us in the wrong direction!;p

FWIW I bumped this thread in my search for cheaper cents per mile transportation cost.

The US Department of Energy's Energy Information Admin has a cents per gallon for the spot and residential markets.

The latest market data as of Mar 17, 2008 for Indiana is 246.9 cents per gallon.

This might be useful for someone.

I'm thinkin about doing this to my 80. Any thoughts on putting the tanks under the body, where the spair tire sits on an 80? Pro/Cons.

I've got a 2F intake manifold if the configuration of the 3FE's plenum does not work.

If you are going to mount the tanks under the body, make sure to build some beefy skid plates to help protect them from any possible damage.

Yeah, that's a major concern I have. I beefy protective undercarriage is going to be a most.

So how do you check the liquid in the tanks to monitor the level? What I mean is: are there any solutions to in-cab monitoring?

G'day, The Blue & the Orange FJ40's both run duel fuel with tanks under slung at rear (quite common here).

The Blue one has no bash plate and does make occasional contact with the terrain but so far there hasn't been any huge explosions! The Orange one (mine) has a bash plate and had the tank lifted when a 2" body lift was fitted and thus far hasn't hit anything solid. So underneath is fine but better if you have a body lift.

My local Mechanic obtained & fitted the Fuel gauge to the tank - all I have to do is read the little lights - lots of green = you're go to go, Red = you're walking home. I know of a couple of 80 series running Duel fuel and they use the same gauge for both types.

One other thing if you go underneath, make sure the tank is heat shielded if the exhaust runs near it.

Cheers

any body know what the Californa law is on running Propane? I know there is a lot of natural gas buses here. Dose a propane car need to pass smog in CA?

Question for you Matty....

How do you fill you're tanks that are mounted under the rear? Do you have a high pressure fitting thats accessible?

What is the capacity of your tanks?

I'd love to switch to propane full time if I could work out the kinks........

Thanks for the info.

Tank Mount

I can answer your question for I have the same setup.

Mine is a 43# cylinder. I have to remove it to refuel.

Kind of a PITA but I think it is worth it.

If I didn't have my kids always with me I would put a larger one in the tub.

I am running a dual fuel setup.
