Hello
I just nerded out on tires, I ran cooper stmaxx 2 sets in this size stock and recommend them. I'm going more aggressive as it gets more miles. I'm switching to MT and did an ironman lift. I'm going to attach my worksheet if I can. Weight matters, I just went with toyo mt as firestone gave me a quote of 222 per tire plus 10 percent military discount and 100 off for promotion in addition.
My list:
Toyo mt 33.5d 61#
Maxxis bighorn 33.3 52#
Cooper st maxx 32.9 59#
Yoko geo mt 33.2 54.9#
Bfg km3 33.1 59#
Falcon wild peak 33.1 59#

List,,
New addition cooper evolution 285/7516 is 54#
Procomp mt2 32.9diameter 57 pounds and 40k warranty
So maxxis razor and procomp have treadwarranty

I wish I had gotten 255/85/16 instead of the 285/75/16....And The Yoko MTs are what I should’ve bought! Might try to offload these 285 KO2s and get the 255 Yokos. My dad runs those tires and loves them.

I have been wanting a 255 for years. But I don’t need MT. I wish the major brands would offer up an AT option. They wouldn’t be a big seller, but there may be more interest than they would think.

I love tall and skinny tire as the 255/85.

I had 255/85 Toyo MT on my overland equiped 60 and was torn when it come to buy tire for my 100.

The Toyo MT went from 19/32 to 7/32 in 22 000 miles which is not that much.

I put this on the weight of my 60 (6900) and all the rough back country road I drove.

Since my 100 weight 7400, I chose 285/75 but willing to try 255/85 again.

I might think the 255 is too narrow to support all the weight of the 100 so they wear out too fast.

Can some one comment this hypothesis ?

I too would be interested if this size were more available in AT tread patterns. I just don’t want the extra noise and (and possibly shorter lifespan) that comes with an MT. I’d take the KO2s in this size immediately.

The contact patch area will be the same for both tires if they are reasonably similar in sidewall stiffness (almost a given) and aired to the same pressure. So the narrower tire will just have a slightly longer contact patch (again as the area has to be the same). I wouldn't think that would result in more tire wear but I'm far from a tire expert.

I have the BFG 255/85/16s on my 2000 LX470 and love them. They are just a tad noisier than the 265/75/16 KO1s (couldn't hear the KO1s at all). Traction is great, handling is light and responsive and the extra ground clearance over my previous tires is real nice too.

I am very interested in this. My plan is to go 255/85-16 soon. Weight is good to know. The other thing that is needed to know is number of sidewall plys.

I've run tall/skinny on my Xterra for 3 sets of tires (235/85-16), and LOVE the handling on and off road. I frequently air down to 16 psi. I run Duratrax and like how they are more squishy.

My LX470 is gonna be loaded down most of the time (armor + cargo), and I REALLY HATE tires and PSI settings that don't remove washboard and other bumps. What I don't know is how the heavier vehicle responds to the E-rated tire stiffness, I'd love to hear some real-world discussion on that.

I have just over 40k miles on a set of 255/85R16 Cooper ST Maxx, load range E on the stock 16x8 wheels. These tires have about 30% tread remaining and have started to get loud. Not mud tire loud, but I notice the noise with the windows down.

Mastercraft is a subsidiary of Cooper, I thought those Courser CXT's looked familiar! They are very similar to the ST Maxx.

I'll probably be ready for tires sometime next year and plan to stick with the 255/85R16 size. It is perfect for a slightly lifted 100. I suspect I'll end up with the same tires unless I want to try another brand just for fun.

I'm interested in 255/85 as well, but concerned that might look a little too narrow on the 100 compared the to 285/75 in running now. Anyone care to post some pics from various angles?

Pics make all threads better! 😁

I have a 2001 Excursion with the 7.3L Powerstroke as well as my 2000 LX470. I changed the tires from BFG KOs in 265/75/16 to 285/75/16s and regret it. The steering is cumbersome now. When the tires wear out I will change them to the same 255/85/16 KM3s I put on the LX470.

Here are a couple of pictures with my ST Maxx 255/85R16. They are not quite pizza cutters.
