I cannot get the tailgate off my pig and was wondering if you guys have any ideas. I've used penetrating lube twice and cannot get a single screw loose. If I have to drill them out are there replacement screws available?
Thanks

do you have an impact screw driver? It's a little device with a phillips head on one side and a striking surface on the other. You put the phillips head on the screw, hold on for dear life, and hit the impact surface with a hammer.... I used one of those to get my tailgate off.. Works like a champ

Finding metric screws is no big deal, I got a shoebox full of all sizes from a place my dad goes here in SC. I couldnt get most of them out though I ended up just cutting the shaft it rotates on in the end so I could get it off. Just use lots of penetrating oil and let it soak good.

Don't forget to loosen the torsion bar too if it isn't busted. It needs to be disconnected as well or you'll be left holding a tailgate anchored to your truck with a 1/2" steel bar!!

Searching on this - How does one loosen the torsion bar?

Very Carefully! Lol.

I had one guy hold a large pry bar against the attachment to the tail gate while I undid the bolts that held it on and then slowly released the tension. It seems like an easy to smash fingers!

Do you have the OEM shop manual? It gives the procedure in there. You need to block the bar with a 2x4 or something so you don't get pinched.

I used an impact screwdriver (that I got at sears) to get mine out. I got all the hinge screws out but nearly trashed them all in the process. I bought new ones from SOR. As for the little screws that hold on the tension bar cover, I just replaced them with self tapping little sheet metal screws. Worked like a dream.

Thanks k9

I found new stainless screws with allen head at Ace for the tailgate.

I have not gone after the cover yet. I want to clear the dirt out of the phillips pattern on them all first. I assumed they were just self tapping screws in there already? No?

Yes. But they were a bitch for me to get out because they were rusty as all hell.

It's a '55!! EVERYTHING fits the "rusty" description!!

Pulled the tailgate, hinges, etc. offf Frankencruiser this weekend. There was torsion with all installed. After finally getting the last screw out of the hinge (isn't there always at least one that defies all logical application of tools, chemicals and heat?) on the passenger side, the L-shaped end of the torsion bar lifted out of the slot on the driver's side. Is that normal? Again, it still provided torsion to the tailgate when all was together.
