I have a 74 fj40,and I swapped out the front axle from a 79, for disc brakes,my question is does the proportioning valve go in the line to the front or rear brakes, and does it matter where in the brake line it goes? (Up by the master cylinder vs down closer to the axle)

hope you swapped the diff out to match the rear.

I thought you needed to do was remove the residual valve.

proportioning valve would go in the rear circuit

Uh oh,please dont tell me I just screwed up. :(

1. you need the ring and pinion from a 79 in the rear, or you need your 74 ring and pinion in the front.

the 79 ring and pinions will give you a lower cruising speed on the highway. If you have 33s or smaller, this would be a good mod.

2. you dont have to do this immediately as long as you DO NOT engage 4WD or lock your hubs. You could drop your front DS to be safe :hmm:

essentially if you used 4wd today, your front wheels would be moving faster than yoru rear wheels. on pavement this would reak havoc.

Check it because the 1/79 had the old gears in it. 4.11's I believe.

Yes but offroad it would be hilarious

Thanks all for the wisdom, looks like the money I was saving for a HFS lift will have to wait, sounds like its a bit beyond my ability to do, will have to find someone to do it,good thing I still have the 74 front axle and didnt sell it. :)

maybe somebody on this forum can walk you through it - but it should not be too difficult to swap your '74 front gears into the '79 diff

Falconer, I have the same issue. I've bought all the parts to put 3.7s(stock for 81) in my front axle. Figured I'd replace the brake calipers/hubs and seals while I was at it. I am planning to do it the second week of July when I have some days off. If you can wait we could do it at the same time and help each other out. I have the FSM and hoping I can find the rest on here!

Do you have to disassemble & swap the ring and pinion gears or can you unbolt & swap the entire 3rd member carrier with ring, pinion & spiders in place?

I think I'm just going to have to farm it out, the guy I'll take it to is a Cruiser guy too,(he doesn't slam me too bad on labor) ,its just a little beyond my abilities,I didn't even take auto shop in school.......(kickin myself now for it)

Neither did I. You might surprise yourself if you just try. If things don't work out in your favor, put it back together and then take it to your cruiser guy.
I didn't think I could do my brakes, but I dug into it and was able to. You'll never know if you don't try.

This is not hard to do and worth it to at least give it a try. I'd recommend tearing down your '74 axle first. It's virually the same as the '79 & you'll have a very good idea of how to tear down the newer axle/swap 3rd members. By the time you get your '74 3rd out you'll know if you want to farm it out or not and still roll the project to the shop if you choose. If you can read a cook book (or put together a kids toy with the warning "some assembly required") you can do this swap. BTW, the kids toy is much harder!!!

My thoughts exactly.... beat me by a minute or two!
