I have a 86 Runner and would like to install an earlier model axle that is the solid axle, off an 83,84. First of all is possible? Typically what would you have to pay for one? Of course I would have to take apart and do all the maintenance stuff on it. How many hours for just the swap, without doing the maintenance stuff on the one bought?
Thanks

Okay first off yes it's possible. A few companies sell SAS kits. This will provide everything for the front end swap. Here are a few companies that sell the SAS kits:

www.marlincrawler.com
www.allprooffroad.com
www.sky-manufacturing.com

The front axle should go for 300 dollars or less just for one with stock steering, birfs and axles. A solid axle swap can be done in a weekend if you are prepared enough.

Try to find an 84-85 axle because it has a full gusset on top of the axle.
Check the marlin crawler board and you will find everything you need ;)

Actually, the gusset is on the bottom of the axle, not the top. But All Pro and Marlin both offer a full length weld on gusset for the top of the housing. So you could use an earlier axle with the shorter gusset and add the other one.
