Is anyone good with 3d printing or cad to make a switch holder in the sunglass holder up top by the sunroof controls? I've seen someone here mount their radio there but was thinking a 5 switch holder from otrattw would be awesome. I just don't have the skills to do it.

There's literally nowhere to mount factory switches on these things

I was just realizing the same about lack of placement for AUX switches in the GX. I don't want to hijack your idea yet I was literally going to ask if someone, with skills, could make a custom switch plate that would replace the ash tray and lighter holder. This would make the wiring easier, for me, as no need to run them down and around the windshield/headliner. I would think heavier gauge wires for multiple off road lights MAY interfere with the airbag.

By the way I have been an 80 Mudder for years...but my cherry LX450 was just totaled by falling ice, which caved in the roof, so I decided to replace it with a GX470 so I'm new with you folks and am enjoying the threads!

I can help you out @Gx4sevend ... that's what I do for a living ... metal parts design, CAD, 3d modeling, laser cutting, cnc bending, welding, steel, Stainless, Alm, ect.... just need some general dimensions of what you have in mind ... I guess I can test fit it out mine

Welcome Sir !

I was thinking something like this,.......

the left side of the shifter is the home to all switches and switch plates. It just screams for it!

A while back I had a custom switch plate made from my drawings to replace the useless storage compartment on the dash under the HVAC controls. The computer rendering was done based on my sketch for my final approval. I still don't have all the intended accessories installed but I wasn't going to do multiple versions. I have been very pleased with the panel and the back lighting looks pretty close to OEM. Sorry I don't have a better shot of the switch plate stored in my phone.

Anyway, I highly recommend Jon Allen -- he was very professional and had a quick turnaround. I may have more work done in the future along the lines of replacing the sunglasses holder. As I recall his website is gaugeplates.com. I'm in line at Space Mountain and don't have a good signal to check it, lol

I like, but gaugeplates.com doesn't link to anything for me, page not working

You're right, the website seems dead. That sucks! I'll have to see if I can track him down elsewhere. If I do I'll post it up here.

Oh OK, yeah the non Nav has a big blank plate that is just begging for buttons.
that "blank" panel is a transition panel and no there is not really any room behind it to do anything. i cut into it and mounted my beltronics hidden radar display there but i wish i hadnt, the angle is so bad i cant really read it... that thing is about 3/8" tall and about the only thing that will fit in there. as you have a triangle of space, as the climate controls go strait back in about 5" or so and they are more of a vertical angle than that "filler" panel. that panel is also where the upper climate control and lower ash tray and 12v socket panels connect so you cant really cut away much of its support either.

Ah sorry it turned out that way but thank you for being the guinea pig on it. Was really thinking you could mount something pretty clean in there, guess not.

I still think the sunglasses holder would be perfect for 5 or 6 switches, depending on space. Keeps stuff out of the way and could be super clean looking when finished.

Bump - anybody else come up with anything else on this yet? I'm having the same problem trying to find a good place to mount 2 rocker switches for lights. Has anyone tried the wood grain panel directly to the left of the steering wheel? I'm kind of waiting on the shift lever panel for compressor/locker switches and whatever else I need at that time...

They did in gxor. Several user it for ham and others for switches

I ditched the ash tray and 12v socket. I removed the doors and re-attached them to the panel so I could use them as a mounting point. On the former 12v socket cover I mounted a USB charge port. On the ash tray side I currently have a hole where my headphone cord/aux input is fed through. I plan to put a switch there once I finish building my Bluetooth module, I want to use it to activate the backup camera, but I haven't had time to play with it yet. I thought about those switches and using them for something, just haven't had much time lately to play around with it.
