Storage ideas for factory spare tire area

I have an air tank down there where the spare used to be. I think it would be a great spot to mount a spare front and rear driveshaft and a medium size tuffy box to be used for spare parts. That is my plan eventually. The spare box would have stuff like spare ignition parts, starter, alternator, birfields, front axles and all the little hardware.

I moved my spare out from under the truck for a day of wheeling. I have a sleeping platform and it slips under it like a glove. For now i am leaving it there. I have no plans to do a fancy swingout carrier because i like the easy access to my rear hatch. But i started thinking that maybe i could use the area under the truck where the spare was as a storage area. Has anyone else done this. It would obviously only be things that could be outside the truck and exposed to elements. But i was thinking you could fab up a shallow box or platform that would hang from the tire mounting chain. Lower it down and load it up with dirty things like spare parts or what not. Then raise it up like you would the spare tire.

I recently got a NATO gas can. This had me thinking. What if there was enough room to lay two cans flat on a "pallet" with a lip around it. The tire chain bolted right between them. Then raise it up It would be a great way to store 10 gal fuel. Low center of gravity, no lifting cans and if the do drip a little gas it just drips on the ground. I figure two cans and some type of pallet or so would weight close to 100 pounds. I dont know if the tire carrier can hold that.

I was going this direction using RotoPaks (a perfect fit between the rails) then I found a factory aux tank and sold off the RotoPaks

I understand how it is meant to mount and open but that is also on the side of a stake bed truck. Think of how you would crawl under the back of your truck to open it and have the door come down in your face to access, that would be a much bigger hassle then it was worth.

I see carrying stuff you need in a emergency as accessible. I feel the same about slide out drawers as well however. I can think of many times I would not be able to access that area if hung up, or drawers being backed up against something.
