Sorry you had to go through this hullhopper
But it sounds like you have the skills and ambition to live my dream.
Sawzaw it is. 80 buggy thingy away. I look forward to your pics.
As to your comment about the sliders.
No you still need sliders, your rockers are untouched as I think you will find that most of the 80 is. You could probably put a new top on her but where is the fun in that. Roll cage, soft top, you ROCK. Live my dream man

Nick,

I understand your point.

This is the 2nd stolen car in my neborhood and 14th car broken into.

We live in a gated community on saltwater. Both of the convicts lived less than one mile from my house.

This was not a one night event, if that was the case I would give them a break. The other car they stole, not one finger print. All they stole was his house keys.

They thought/think they are baddass untouchables.

Im going to reach out and bitchslap them into prison.

I did think 9400 was light, cause I have about 15K in the truck, but a 1000 buyback with a 4 month old ARB in good condition and both axles and engine with 82,000! origional miles on a 1993FJ. This FJ is about to come back to life in a big way.

I am actually excited. Like I said before, do you think the lady would actually let me go to town on the FJ with a sawzall?

I agree he has made his bed and needs to sleep in it. I would ask the insco to give me 10500 and the truck. The answer is no if you don't ask.

Their first offer is always a lowball. Get them negotiating. They don't want the truck as validated by offering it back for 1k.

Update

Picked up the rig today. Turned the key and drove it off the lot.

NO VIBRATIONS!!!! All the tow guys said there was not a chance in hell she would even start.

The truck drives like she did when I put the lift on!

Only issue is the radiator is leaking.

Try that with a Heep!

4 door convertible is going to be sick. Have fun. What are you going to get for a daily driver?

I should mention, that the 19 year old is likely to spend the next 10 years or more in prison. One bad night and the rest of his life is ruined.
10 years in jail, plus criminal record.
It's not like he murdered anyone.

He screwed up. He screwed big time.
It probably started break-in in looking for money or stuff to sell,
That turned into a car theft.
Then a car chace and an accident.
Things got big real fast.

19 years old. He hardly knows what he is doing.
I am not saying he should be let off scott free.
He should have to pay.
He should have to pay back what he wrecked in full.
I just think there are better forms of punishment rather than prison.

What about those camps out in deserts working on a farm.
Leaning the meaning of hard work and community, and helping others.
A couple years of that and he would probably be really changed.
I doubt he would leave as the same person he started as.

If he is remorseful, it would be nice to try an get amore lenient sentence for him.
Maybe even stop in while in prison and check on him.
I am sure he will be taken back by your good will.
I know it would be hard to do. I would be pissed too.
I have been there, someone stole my BJ60 6 months ago (never caught them).

But how many of us has not screwed up before (I doubt any of us did something this big).
I am sure we all did some very stupid stuff in our late teens.
Maybe nothing like this, but I am sure some of the stuff we did could of been bad.
We have all made royal big mistakes.
If he is remorseful, he might really appreciate some grace.
He could very well learn more out of that, than the next 10 years in prison.

Just a thought.

Cheers,
Nick

Man, listen to you. STEALING a car is not a mistake! Running from the cops is not a mistake. It's EASY not to steal cars. It's EASY not to get in trouble wih the police. Screw those jerk offs. They deserve MORE than they're going to get from our system that's for sure.

So, should we just start releasing everyone from jail that isn't a murderer? Perhaps that rapist, after it was just a mistake he made when he was drunk, grabbing the girl and forcing her to have sex against her will. We shouldn't ruin his life for it. How about the pediophile? It could have just been a one night mistake when he molested the neihbors kid. Perhaps the drug dealer, after all, he might have just needed some money to better his life and was only doing it so he could get ahead?

Where do you draw the line?

Give me a break, what this kid did was not a mistake. A mistake is forgeting to look before you cross the street and getting hit by a car, dropping your soda while driving and running into a parked car. A mistake is not, walking up to a vehicle, breaking into it, ransacking it, picking up your friends, taking a gun out of the back of the vehicle and putting it on your body, and then joyriding around town. I guess it was also a mistake when the police tried to stop the guy and he ran.

Just out of curiosity would you still be saying that the 19yo should be forgiven if he had taken that gun and shot someone with it? What about if he hit and injured another car, or worse yet killed them while being pursued by the police? At what point is the 19yo responsible for the actions and the crimes he commited? Please let us know.

I say throw the book at him. Being leinient will only serve to reinforce that he can commit crimes and not be held responsible. Even though he is facing 10+ years in prison, I bet he will get about 1-2 years, tops.

So, does this mean that I need to get some big anchor chains and tie my 80 down to a concrete pier?

Another option has occured to me. A simple set of wires & switches to lock out the starter circuit. It might be a use for the switch blanks with the coin slots in them in the center console. Wire in 4 switches in line on a single signal wire that interrupts the key signal circuit... If any one of the 4 switches is in the wrong position, nothing happens. It would require the driver to 'scramble' them every stop to be effective though.

Or, disconnect the starter from the keys. Put a momentarty tractor switch under the steering wheel Saab style. I did this on a bio degrading '76 Chevy truck when the key based starter switch failed... Nobody ever stole it. :-)

Sarcasm asside. The victim here is the person who's property was stolen. Get a few wanna be gangsters loaded up with alchohol & bravado... Best they're put away before they kill someone. Even at 17, they're all old enough to know better. Do they deserve 'hard time' and all it 'in-tails'? Yep. Just think if they ran into your wife or sister driving a 5,000+ lb truck set up like ours with ARB bumpers and no crumples. Having them roll... it brings a tear to they eye for the 80, but it is one of the more desireable outcomes given some of the violent alternatives our trucks are theoretically capable of. Lets face it, we drive tanks. There has to be some way we can protect them from misuse in unapproved hands without incoveniencing ourselves too badly.

My buddies sell cars at toyota. They showed them a video of a Taco being crushed by a building (like the kind the set charges in to demolish them). Anyway, they cleared of the rubble and started it up and drove it away...
That is amazing that you could just drive it away, but it sort of doesn't surprise me.
Heep would surely be a heep... they'd have had to go into someone's back yard to find the axle from it being thrown clear when it flipped.
Cheers!

What a bummer! Not just that ure 80 got trashed but that they didn't get paralized in the process. What a bunch of punks.

As to your insurance co. You can fight with them about the value of the vehicle by providing reciepts and showing true market value. Don't just accept the settlement they give you because it will most likely be too low.

Good luck and keep us posted

Kinda disappointed to see the roof cave in like that on a roll...

My wife and I were just talking abount this.

Do you have any better pictures?

I've watched 19 year old men die in combat for their country - no sympathy from me.

I'm actually pretty impressed if they were really going 60mph when it rolled, the damage isn't too bad.

I will add some better pics of the frame tommorow. I pulled alot out with a fork lift this weekend.

A bit of hydraulic pressure and jumping up and down on the hood makes a hell of a difference.
