Has anyone used/designed any self powered gps tracking unit? I store a car in a barn offsite from my house for the winter, and wanted to know if there is anything out there that can sit out there for 3-4 months at a time? I see a lot of junk out there on amazon.

still keeping my eyes out for @satchel 's 62!

If you were to wire the device off a separate 12v battery (could be whatever size you would need for the power draw, thinking small battery like for a motorcycle in the rear quarter panel) could have it separately from the starting battery. If you have the battery on a trickle charger in the barn you could get something to trickle both batteries. And anything pre-made or like in the video above would work. Hope that helps.

Didn't see Nook beat me to it...

I don't know of a self contained unit, but haven't done a bunch of research on them either. I guess my suggestion would be to do like I have and keep your phone on and plugged into your truck, and maybe come up with a way to keep your truck charged up enough just to power the small amount the phone uses, maybe a solar trickle charger if there is no power in the barn, idk. I'm sure there's a simpler solution I'm not aware of.

I have been using the SPOT gps Tracker in both the LC and my son's Supra. Best $100 spent.

Spot Trace™ Anti-Theft Tracker : Cabela's

https://www.amazon.com/Trace-Anti-T...pID=51RPhW9VpVL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

I had Best Buy install it way up under the dash, totally discreet/invisible, rugged, waterproof, blah blah, powered all the time. Instantly reports any movement and sends a breadcrumb trail signal up to the SARSAT every 5 mins which shows up on the handy dandy mapping app on the iPhone. It is a subscription, but is a lot less than LoJack and a lot more reliable. Can't recommend it enough for these older cars with little to no anti-theft capability. I don't even really worry about locking it so the thieves won't break windows or door/ignition locks, I can just track and call Johnny Law and guide them right to it. I mean we spend tons of $$$ and effort on them, so why not spend a little of that on keeping it safely recoverable.

Cheers

I would get it if I were you, I'm thinking of getting one maybe 2. Any word on your ride?

Not sure if you were directing that question to me, but no, I haven't heard anything. My understanding is that no one is even assigned to the case yet, so it's one of those scenarios where they can't do much until someone turns it in or it gets towed from somewhere essentially. The spot device looks cool, but I think for me the free used phone method is what I'll use.

I see SPOT is having a sale on the HW:

Half Off SPOT Devices, Instant Savings | FindMeSPOT.com

@d90rover do you know if you are able to cancel the subscription, do they prorate it?

Not sure about cancellation/prorate policy, my guess would be no prorated refund, it's an annual subscription so you buy it a year at a time. As an aside, why would you want to cancel the sub? Just move the Spot to another vehicle, or boat, or trailer, your shady teenager's car, anything you want to keep an eye on.

Cheers

Spot Trace seems like a worthy security measure. So I bought one today.
With the Club bar I should be relatively safe but the kill switch is still on the maybe list.

We Lojacked all our cruisers after we got the 88 stolen, my wife became a Lojack dealer at the car lot she worked at, so we got them done cheep . We also got the city(we live in) to install Lojack on the patrol cars....state patrol already has the gear installed as did most other agencies. Cops like lojack...they can be driving around and get a hit...and know they are gonna get someone.

There is probably something better out now....

I like the spot trace. Where did you guys mount it. Ideally I would like to mount it out of the way but would need to play around to make sure it was hidden but still had good LOS for satellites.

Damn, I'm here in Denver as well and will keep an eye out!! I've decided that since I'm a welder, one of the first things I should make is a heavy duty anti-theft lock for the shift stick. I'll post it up when I do. Good luck on getting it back!!!

there is or was a company from Israel that made a killer shifter lock, can't remember the name but they have been used in 60's before

Install had me removing the front of the dashboard...
Love using it... gives some sense of security...
Use it all the time along with additional kill switche*S*...
I'm going to make these losers work for it... but hope it never comes to that.

If i was to do it all over again.. i would place it closer to the driver side, as it would make it more rigid....

To the OP i got my eyes peeled....

Good luck..!!

When I had my 40 with no top...I made my own shifter lock.

I welder a single chain link to the shift lever. Then welded another section of chain that reached the passenger seat base to the seat frame.

I used a decent pad lock to connect the chain ends when the shifter was in the reverse position.

Worked well for me, and I really should do this in my 60!

Hope you get the 62 back soon.

Another way to track your vehicle is just to buy an inexpensive cell phone, hide it behind the dash somewhere, turn off all the ringers and sounds, and wire its power source into the truck. Then if the truck goes missing you can use the cell location services to track the phone...assuming its not parked in a warehouse or mountain.

oops I see this was mentioned twice already
