Steering racking replaced

Almost positive that bushing will do nothing for a leak. If you get a new rack do the upgraded bushing on new rack. Search for steering rack bushing, you will find quite a bit about this. Good luck.

OK. Had a 6 hour road trip today and had some wandering. I've read all the threads. Anyone know the OEM part number for the passenger side bushing for a 2000LX? The threads are all over the map. I have a 20 hr road trip in two weeks and want to get this fixed in advance.

On the 4runner they didn't.

I plan on that...some day. I figure after the 10th rack, and the 20th CV axle I'll make the move on a SAS.

As for the rack, the SuperPro bushings are arriving this week. The truck is going in for the rack Friday. I can't wait for this to be fixed. The rack has gotten so bad that the truck does NOT go straight. It creaks, pops, and moves about all the time. It's almost dangerous on the highway.

What's the verdict?

Alright. So rack #5 is in. SuperPro Poly bushings installed as well.

Results....

Well, simply incredibly. I don't remember the last time the steering was this sharp. I had the tech give me the OEM bushings from the new rack and they are VERY soft. The SuperPro's were rock hard compared to these. Rack #2-4 felt numb, very little feedback, and a lot of slop even new. The poly bushings tighten the steering up quite a bit, and made it very easy to change lanes, and hit corners fast. The feedback is ample, although not to much. I do get a little more going over speed bumps at an angle, it feels more like a solid axle rig on speed bumps now. Highway and smooth road surfaces are incredible. Before I hated corners, but now...well I still hate corners, but the 100 feels so tight, and responsive behind the wheel now it's great.

Remember, I went through two racks this year...they barely lasted 6K each. After feeling the OEM bushings, I now know why.

If you are replacing your steering rack, I highly recommend the SuperPro bushings.

What are some of the symptoms you all have had?

've always noticed that when parking at full turn, the truck seems to shift a bit, feels loose, but when I come off the turn a bit, she stiffens back up. I think in due for lower ball joints, so maybe I'll start there.

Symptom feedback appreciated. Thanks!

I've had a couple racks. I didn't really notice much change in how the vehicle reacted. Mine were just leaking quite a bit.

Mine wasn't leaking. But it groaned at full lock, clunked over bumps, had lots of torque steer and the steering was just sloppy. It might just have been that the bushings were shot.

On my last car, the gears started stripping inside the rack causing slipping. So sometimes you had to turn the steering wheel 3 times to turn right, sometimes only 2 spins, eventually breaking the clock spring wiring.

Figured out the source of front end clunking noise. Looks like I'm joining the club here by getting a new rack installed tomorrow. My quote for parts and labor is a hair under $1,300 if anyone is looking for a comparison.

Truck has 93k on it and was previously owned by some older Hollywood celebrity types. I'm surprised that it was driven hard enough to warrant a new rack.

Well....looks like I am joining the club. I detected a knock in the steering shaft and then it started leaking a little. After about an hour and half drive up from Decatur, I have a small puddle on the garage floor and fluid running down past the bushing by the lower control arm as well as dripping off the oil filter.
Sucks.
I am going to wait a month or so to get it done. I know in its current condition it will not last the 6 years in the Philippines. 190,000 miles and some good wheeling in there.

Did you hear a noise coming from the steering shaft inside the cab/underneath the dash or was it from the engine bay?

I would check the bushing on the passenger side first before replacing the rack. That bushing holds the entire rack in place. My guess is if you don't wheel hard, or smash around on rocks the bushing has opened up and it allowing play.

I did not note the rack moving around but will look harder at that. The leak is the real indicator to me.

The clunk was noticeable in the cab at the wheel. I had a guy turn the wheel a bit while I examined the shaft thinking I could have an issue at one of the U joints but did not identify a problem there. I am getting a little steering wander on the freeway so the bushing Nick mention being bad certainly is a possibility. The leak appears to be at the input seal where the steering shaft enters the box. It's dripping pretty good.

I have what is likely the exact same noise. I've examined the steering shaft u joints in the cab and the engine bay, no play or concerns. Almost thought it was the manual tilt column joint but wasn't convinced.

I'll try Nick's suggestion with the PS bushing. My rack is leaking but not badly.

@GaFJC - I have a extra brand new OEM bushing Part # 45517-60010 if you need one. Looks like it lists for $32 and sell around $23 from Toyota... I'll take $10 for it and you pay shipping if you want it...
