Steering racking replaced

Also check for play on the rack on the ds side. I have replaced my ps side bushing, but still had knock on the ds side. A couple turns and the knock was gone. No leaking either, but in time I am sure with 35's and wheeling hard. Turning the ds side was a bear- they need to be tight and a little play will make it knock.

@GaFJC - I have a extra brand new OEM bushing Part # 45517-60010 if you need one. Looks like it lists for $32 and sell around $23 from Toyota... I'll take $10 for it and you pay shipping if you want it...

Jgray - Many thanks but based on the recommendations of others I've ordered poly.I normally go OEM all the way but not in this case.

I would check the bushing on the passenger side first before replacing the rack. That bushing holds the entire rack in place. My guess is if you don't wheel hard, or smash around on rocks the bushing has opened up and it allowing play.

Nick- I have what may be a stupid question. After I replace the PS D bushing will I need an alignment?

The bushing is split, so you can simply unbolt the bracket and slip the new one in. You should not have to undo the tie rod. I would suggest poly bushings for the rack. The OEM rubber is way to soft for oversized tires or any type of wheeling.

For safe measures, IMO get an alignment after touching anything on the rack.

Many thanks! You answered another question I had also - if the bushing was split.

Thinking I may be joining the New Rack Club sooner than later. I need to confirm if my symptoms are from a rack or pump though.
04 TLC 2.5 OME Suspension 33's TOYOs 143k miles Recently aligned after lift installed with no issues.

Truck has no leaks, noises, clunking, or wandering. Fluid is full and never has to be topped off. Occasionally at full steer, the steering stiffens up and feels manual. Typically started happening coming in and out of parking spaces. This week it happened at a more random time and lasted a bit longer than before. Sort of binds in and out of power steering. I thought this was a symptom of a rack, but considering it could be a pump issue as well. I did search for threads, but didn't locate a similar experience. Mostly racks replaced from leaking, wandering, or physical damage.

My LC is new to me. Have had for 19 months and 10k miles. Would rather do new exhaust than replace rack.

What do you guys think? Is it likely a rack going out or is the pump getting tired? Any questions or things I can check?

If you haven't "topped off" the PS reservoir I assume you haven't flushed the fluid either? I would evac the PS fluid and refresh with synthetic ATF (I just use a kitchen type baster...works; great performance with Amsoil ATF the past 155k+ miles (@226k now). Someone, sorry I forgot whom, did a write up doing the full flush...

Generally I do mine about once per year or when the fluid starts getting darker.
