Nick, how much did your rack alone cost. I have a local guy that says he can get an OEM rack for $347. that seems a bit low?!?!

That sounds too low...IIRC the $500-$600 number is more realistic. Maybe he "found" a crate of them or something and can sell them for $347...if that is the case, buy them and resell on MUD...all the new guys with 100's will need them sooner or later...

Sam/Lowe quoted me $545 for OEM new, not reman, with the MUD discount. The rack does not come with the outer tie rods so you may want to consider replacing those as well. They are $53 each.

Toyota does not offer reman 100 series racks.

New from JTEKT only.

OEM rack is not available reman from Toyota. New only.

Broken Record....:)

IIRC you can get a remanufactured Toyota rack (not from Toyota). For the price delta I would just get new OEM.

I payed around $550 shipped for OEM.

i rechecked to confirm, and he said brand new OEM Yota rack. He is a very reputable source too. good point about the outer tie rods. I will probably pick them up as well.

If that is indeed the case and he can ship I would be interested

^ if its the real deal...gotta be honest at that price its suspect...it might pay for me to have one in the magazine too :)

i will triple check. This guy is very reputable though. Ill check again and report back. i was shocked too when i got the estimate back. thats why i asked again. more to come. . .

Rack what...#4 or is this #5? I think you beat schotts...

What is your front end height right now? You were running it on the higher side. Combined with your driving style... I cant help but wonder if there is a correlation. Hope the fix is on the lower cost side.... sucks!

Oh yeah... you ever have any luck sourcing light bar covers?

The rack is covered under the Toyota warranty, it's no cost for a replacement. I have a 1" lift, on 35's. I do use my 100 as a rock crawler, so that could be the issue. This is rack #4. I have only paid for one rack. I got your PM, I'm responding to the masses as quickly as possible, and yes, I have sourced them. They are going on the site soon!

If I go through racks every 8 months, I may have to rethink the 100 as my wheeling machine!

You definitely run it hard. And as much as I hate to say it.... I don't think the 100 is the right platform for your driving style.... you need something sporty for the road and a dedicated trail rig....

No sweat on the pm.... I have plenty of time...

Nick. With your commute you really need to consider a Leaf or a Volt or heck, a lightly used Tesla Roadster. I bet if you run tr numbers it might even be cost effective. How bout a 1 Series Active E?

As far as racks go, I feel I'm already seeing some symptoms of a rack going out after ~10K on my new one.

Would a tired rack manifest itself in noises orginating in the plastic housing between the steering wheel and dash speedo/tach cluster?

139K miles.

I don't have excessive play (yet) at 9 or 3 or 6 and 12 when the front end is on jack stands.

I am hearing a slight noise when slowly leaving park (forward or reverse) or turning corners from a stop at low speeds. I've done a crude test of checking for play on the steering column inside the cab and inside the engine compartment and everything is tight.

I am wondering if it's just some sort of carrier bearing (like in two piece drive shafts - for a lack of a better description) in the plastic housing between the steering wheel and dash.

It is not the squeak that so many people have. I've kept that lubed.

I have visions of the steering column shaft snapping when the fam and I are heading down the interstate at 75 mph.....

What parts of the steering rack fail? Are the failures typical? Has anyone dissected their old rack?

We've modded everything else on these trucks, so how would you "beef up" a steering rack?
