Hi guys, I'm new around here.

I own an 70 series (I know what u r thinking right now, but I'm not in the wrong series page =) )

The fact is that 7X series in Venezuela come with the 1FZ-F or 1FZ-FE engine since 1992...

My question is, does anyone have ever taken apart the steering pump to replace all seals and then assemble it again on the engine?, I did it and now it makes a sound like engine valves with a great gap... I checked the pump about 4 times in order to be sure that everything's in place...

Thanks in advance!
Greetings from the tropic =)
Jose

The vanes can be installed backwards if you are not careful, maybe that happened.

Bled & checked

Yes, I bled the line. When I disassemble the pump to check everythings in place I also checked the vanes, they had a mark of moving inside the center rotor, every vane was correctly placed. The pump works perfectly, but the noise is still there and it shouldn't

Is the screen in the reservoir clogged or the supply hose kinked? Any restriction between the reservoir and pump will cause a groan. If that looks good try a different brand or type of fluid.

Screen is most likely the culprit. I just changed my pump and it still had the same noise as the old one. It did fix the leak, but the noise was still there. Poked a hole in the screen and it went away. Anyone know if that screen can be replaced, or will I need a new resivor?

the noise...

The noise heard when the pump is attached to the engine doesn't sound like fluid noise (as it sounds when you need to bleed the system), it's more a metallic noise, like hiting some piece of metal lightly with a small hammer or something like that. I turned on the engine with the pump out and no noise can be heard, then attached the pump again and the noise comes up.

Can I attach a file here? I could try to record few seconds of the noise, maybe that could help:)

You may have assembled something wrong if that's the case. The noise I was talking about is the typical whine from low fluid or restricted flow. You can also check with the engine running for bubbles in the resivor. That's another indication that the screen may be clogged. Just a thought.

Pump gear not meshing correctly?

Fluid is OK

Fluid is OK, I already bled the system and it works fine.

Just to check that gears did not mesh fine I measured from the external side on the engine where the pump is located to the inner side of the gear (the one moved by the crankshaft) and did the same measurement on the pump to the external side of the gear... measure was exact... and I'm pretty sure that it's on the correct angle because when you tighten the nut it reaches a top on the axis of the pump :-S

I got a loud ticking sound after I rebuilt and reinstalled my pump. I was so concerned about my pump being bad that I bought a new pump, and it had exactly the same noise. A highly regarded local Toyota master tech told me that this is common and caused by the drive gear not meshing exactly the same as it had worn in. Even though you put your same gear back in apparently the same position it often lines up slightly differently. He said that the noise would go away within a fairly short time and, in fact, it has become almost unnoticable after about 1000 miles.

Even though the noise is enough to give you a scare, if your pump seems to be working well otherwise I suggest that you keep driving it and it will probably get better quickly.

Of course, the possible amount of difference in gear alignment--and hence noise--is infinitely variable and I'm sure that some lucky people will quickly post that they didn't hear any noise after reinstalling their drive gears.

Thanks!

Thanks MikeB,

I would have done the same thing u did (ask a Toyota mechanic), but unfortunately in my country it's difficult to ask a real mechanic, and those who work on a dealer or authorized shop won't tell you... they will say "bring it and will check it..." of course, that won't be for free and you won't ever know what your car had nor how they repaired (in case they do)...

Well, I think I will have to wait for the noise to disappear by itself

Thanks again to everyone who interested in my question :)

Jose Cuervo, you are a friend of mine :D

Well its Sunday morning
And the sun is shining in my
Eye that is open
And my head is spinning
Was the life of the party
I can't stop grinning
I had too much tequila last night

Jose Cuervo
You are a friend of mine
I like to drink you with
A little salt and lime
Did I kiss all the cowboys
Did I shoot out the lights
Did I dance on the bar
Did I start any fights

Now wait a minute
Things don't look too familiar
Who is the cowboy who's sleeping beside me
Well he's awful cute
But how'd I get his shirt on
I had too much tequila last night

Jose Cuervo
You are a friend of mine
I like to drink you with
A little salt and lime
Did I kiss all the cowboys
Did I shoot out the lights
Did I dance on the bar
Did I start any fights

All those little shooters
How I love to drink them down
Come on bartender let's have another round
Well the music is playing
And my spirits are high
Tomorrow might be painful
But tonight we're going to fly

Jose Cuervo
You are a friend of mine
I like to drink you with
A little salt and lime
Everytime we get together
I sure have a good time
You're my friend, you're the best
Mi amigo... (Mi amigo!)

Jose Cuervo
You are a friend of mine
I like to drink you with
A little salt and lime
Did I kiss all the cowboys
Did I shoot out the lights
Did I dance on the bar
Did I start any fights

Jose Cuervo
You are a friend of mine
