It occurs to me as I turn the crank on my 78 BJ40 that I really don't know the proper starting procedures for my rig.

Can anyone help me out? I finally get it started but it sure takes a while.

Do I need to hit the "glow on" button every try for starting? I assume I should not be pumping the accelerator?

Anyone have an owner's manual that covers the Toyota recommendations?

Thanks,

Emilio

every time the engine is "cold" then a glow might be needed. it does make for an easier start.
you are holding the glow button till the screen glows bright orange, right?
no "pumping" needed but you might want to hold the throttle down 1/3rd but not neccesary...
if the glows are workign proper and the compression is high then it shoudl start easily on all but the coldest days...
cheers

my 80 bj40's starting procedure is , turn the key backwards ( you'll feel a spring in there) and hold for ten to twenty seconds ( until light glows on dash, tho it's really hard to see sometimes) and then, if it runs like @&@&@&@& once it's started, you hold the glow button until it smooths out.

shouldn't need to crank it much at all, usually two whirrs from the starter at most till it goes. unless it's damn cold out.
cheers,
ryan
