"I would remove the delivery valves at the front of the pump", WTF? An inline pump only has one set of delivery valves, and they're on the top of the pump. I haven't the slighest idea of what you would hope this would achieve.

I'm with amaurer on this one, alot of people have spoken a lot of crap and probably scared the christ out of you. This is all you need do.

1. Drain the fuel from the tank and replace it.
2. Change the fuel, oil and air filters (check the intake system for crap while your at it).
3. Bleed the fuel system to the head of the pump.
4. Change the oil.
5. Remove glow plugs and lube the bores.
6. Crank it to get some oil circulating.
7. Reinstall plugs and go for gold (you might want to cross your fingers).

This engine is older than the hills and hasn't been run in 17 years, If it goes it goes, If it's stuffed you couldn't possibly be surprised.

A H engine have 6 delivery valves . I suggested removing them to pump any old fuel from the housing rather than pump it through the valves and injectors and possibly causing a blocked injector.
Ok ,so I had been looking a rotary pumps that day, just an hnest error
As for old diesel oil, have you ever dismantled an old diesel engine that hasnt been started for some time?
The last two I have done had an inch of thickened sludge sitting on the bottom of the sump that would not drain out.
Its easy to drain the thin stuff out but if the thickened stuff has settled in the upper parts,I cant see the engine lasting too long once its disturbed and makes its way to the oil pump.
IMO ,the old engine would probably leak like a seive from the hardened rubber seals that have dried out.

And by the way ,everyone has the right to an opinion on here

Your quite correct, everybody does have the right to an opinion here, including myself. Everyone also has the right to try and counter what they see as bad advice.

Considering that I am a diesel fitter I have actually dismantled an engine or 2 myself. What the orignal poster was asking was what is required to start an engine that has been sitting for 17 years, so far he has been told to disassemble half the bloody engine. I personally didn't get the vibe that the poster was interested in a full rebuild, he seemed interested in doing only what was absolutely necessary to minimise the risk of a complete disaster, so I gave him guidance in that direction. There are a million and one possibilities of disaster on a task such as this and short of striping and measuring every single component for spec there is a no need to list every possibility and detail how to avoid it, you'll just give the poor owner a stress related heart attack.

i am guessing he fired it up, it ran for a minute or two, heared a nasty squeal, shut it down and it seized... no wait, that was an old B engine i fired up that had been sitting for a decade or so...

You paid $800 for that?! You may be the luckiest person on this board.

Take the glow plugs out and insert ATF inside the piston and leave it there for few days then hand crank the engine full 4 turns then, do whatever the rest of guys say in here.

if your engine was off for 17 years, you had open intake and exhaust valves. talk about corrosion build up inside the pistons and rings due to moisture in the air sucking inside your cyl walls. any one that suggest you could just start the engine need to go back to auto shop 101.

fluffybunnysuit, we see you are active on the forum, but have not made any recent posts on this thread you started.

Your withholding of an update regarding your barn treasure find is both mean spirited and a breach of mud rules, punishable by I don't know what. :deadhorse:

We demand immediate attention to this matter. Your thread will continue to bob around page 1, kept afloat with sundry stupid and meaningless posts until you surrender an update.

Oh, and have a nice day.....

bump so that rick doesn't have to do it all by himself.

What happened!?!?!

or
i will offer to double his money and take the old girl off his hands. that way it will go to a good home, get a heart transplant and he doesn't have to worry about starting it at all...

Ok... sorry guys... i have been trying to finish 2 houses and i havent had hardly any time to work on it. I did drain the tank under the seat, opened it up and it actually looked very clean. Got fuel all the way to the filter, new oil, new oil filter, i was good to go. Climbed in the cab, cranked on the starter, engine turns over and...........

...as it turned out, the motor was actually an Oldsmobile LF9 which was a 350-cubic-inch (5.7 L) Diesel V8 produced from 1978 to 1985.

Ha ha!
