What is everyone's opinion on a 100 series starter these days? Toyota is reman, so is denso. Any better options in 2023?

Also what else needs to be replaced besides the intake gaskets?

I installed a genuine Toyota one. I got 20 years out of the original starter, so well worth it.
While you are there, do the T-pieces in the heater lines as well. Now you have the room to do it.

The OEM starter is a Denso. I'm running a Denso reman in mine - it's been in a couple years with no issues, and was around $100 on RockAuto.

I got a new one last year.

There are no new toyota starters, only reman.

T pieces were done last year
You can indeed get brand new 100% genuine Toyota starters. Your local dealer will not carry it, and may not even have access to order it. Thanks to global supply chain and e-commerce though, you can buy one!

When you're looking at part numbers the "-84" suffix signifies reman. If you find the Toyota part number with no "-84" and it's priced around $500-1000 through a reputable source, it should be genuine new OEM. Nearly $600 for an 06 via Partsouq as of today. Well worth picking one up, IMO.

My part number directly from the Lexus dealer is 28100-50091, AUD504 is September 2021.
Oops, already 2 years now.

Seems like a hard sell when both are legit Denso starters, but the new one is 6X as much as a reman and requires shipping from overseas (the Denso remans are USA-remanufactured). My OEM starter only made it to 136k and 13 years before the solenoid started clicking.

I bought the denso reman

These reman vs Toyota vs whateverthehellelse convos get contentious. And the OP always just buys what they want anyway, so…

Signed,
07 LX with 252k on original starter

I just wanted to see what else was out there. The one from a foreign land is the only one I didn't know about and is priced too high imo.

I'm glad your starter hasn't given you issues, wish mine wouldn't

I was on team "just buy a Denso" up until about 2012-2015 when I had multiple Denso reman parts (one a starter) fail straight out of the box. In my experience, Denso reman in Mexico is not the same "Denso" made in Japan (often within a Toyota campus).

The genuine part is definitely $$$$, but the entire Toyota/Lexus market is built upon the idea that the "best" parts are worth substantially more than the "good enough" hardware. 🤷

My Denso was purchased in 2020 and was USA-remanufactured.

I just got a peek at my starter. Remanufactured "for Toyota" with -84 designation on part number. Denso name is there faintly but it is hard to see.
Unfortunately I don't know when the previous owner had it replaced but it looks like it has been there for at least a little while. FWIW
