Guys, after dealing with some starting issues, I was thinking about getting my starter replaced or rebuilt in the future. However I would only want to rebuild a toyota unit. I don't know how to identify what starter I have. I haven't removed it yet, as I don't need to. Are there any markings visible either from the above view, or by looking underneath. It is dirty to a label/tag maybe covered up. Thanks for the help in advance

Check for a sticker, but often times they are missing or not legible.

You could just replace it and rebuild the one you take off for a spare. Pretty sure they are interchangeable (1.4 kw & 2.0 kw) but I'd opt for the 'cold climate' version 2.0 kw if you live anywhere the weather gets cold.

Easy, just look in from the drivers side front tire, wipe away the grime, and you can see which one you have.

There are a few different kinds for the 80's, mine was the non cold weather one. Will be replacing with this very soon.

Apparently they are pretty easy to rebuild with a starter contact rebuild kit, but I found this new Denso one for the same price as the rebuild parts needed. So I opted for new. I may rebuild the
The Toyota one to keep as a spare.

Is this for sure that they are interchangeable?

Also what is everyones trust factor on this......

More Information for DENSO 2800169

I think I'm going to opt for this and then rebuild the original starter with Toyota parts.

Also anyone have the part number for the rebuld kit?

It’s fine. Buy it. This is definitely not rocket science.

3 different part numbers needed if you are going OEM.

So about $50? Another $40 gets you a completely reman starter by Denso, no-brainer.

They are remaned Denso starters but I wonder if they are remaned by Denso? I mean when I get rebuilt calipers from Napa I know they were originally Toyota calipers but Toyota didn’t rebuild them.

They are remanned by Denso in Michigan.
Good to know! @beno always the Toyota encyclopedia.

Right now I’m trying to get the clutch back in my Audi so I can pull the cruiser into the garage to wrench on it. Just got the old pilot bearing out.

Denso made the original starter, so most brands of reman starters are a Denso core rebuilt with whatever parts. They are popular enough that many generic parts are available, including castings, some make new starters from generic parts. Most brands that we have seen have generic parts, some missing things like gaskets, breathers, etc. Generic parts are not necessarily bad, we use bulk contacts, they are not rocket science, a bent piece of copper, a couple of bucks beats $12? But would prefer that my starter were properly assembled, with all of the parts?

Denso brand reman is done by them or their contractors. All that we have used have been great quality, have had as good or better results than the dealer starters that we have installed. So Denso cores, rebuilt by Denso, they are likely to know how to do it as well or better than anyone?
