Hi guys, I pulled my '77 out of the garage yesterday and got out to close the garage door and it stalled out. I tried pouring fuel in the carb and no luck. What are the steps I should take next? Coil, igniter?

Definately check for spark first...By pouring some fuel in the carb, you have eliminated a fuel problem. Could be in your ignition switch as well.

First, is it a Toyota engine or a Chevy replacement? If it's a Toyota and you're up for it, there are a couple of simple things to check. Pull off the air cleaner and look at the carburetor below. There is a small glass window there that shows how much fuel is in the bowl of the carburetor. There should be a visible line of fuel in the middle of the window. Next, there is one electrical wire to the carburetor. With the ignition switch in the "on" position, pull that wire off and put it back on. You should hear a click when you disconnect it and another click when you connect it. Finally, if you have a voltmeter or a test light, connect the negative to the battery negative and the positive to the coil positive terminal. You should have around 12v or a good bright light.

It's the original 2F. Thanks for the response, I'll have some time this afternoon to try to figure it out.

did you use the choke? could have just loaded it up and made it worse by pouring fuel down.... try keeping the choke open all the way and hold the pedal to the floor and try starting it.... if the plugs are fouled they may need to be replaced

I was putting the FJ back in the garage and it started right up. I took it back out today and the same thing happened, ran for about 2 minutes and then stalled. There is fuel in the glass window in the carb. Could this be a vapor lock issue?

Vapor lock doesn't happen in 2 minutes. If there's fuel in the glass window then it is probably an ignition problem. The first place to look is at your engine fuse. Clean it up and/or replace it. If that doesn't fix it, start with the electrical checks in post #3 above.

Did it stumble and die or just die?

It just died, same as the first time it happened. Runs for about 2 minutes and then dies and will not restart. I tried to restart it the first time it happened with no success until about 3 days later when I was putting it in the garage. I was just turning the engine over to put it back in the garage and it started up but I didn't have time to mess with it so I just turned it off. I wish I would have let it run to see if it would have just died out. Yesterday, same exact ting, ran for 2 minutes then died and would not restart.

Check the wiring...

I have a problem wire at the green plug at the Coil/igniter. Truck will run then just die. it WILL crank but will not start.... fiddle with the plug to get it back "in position" and it'll start and run all day... until it vibrates back out of position.

Also check the plug at the carb for the idle solenoid.

It's the same thing every time, runs for about 2 minutes and then dies. Will not immediately restart but will after a few hours. It always runs for about 2 minutes before stalling. I watched the fuel in the glass in the carb when it stalled and the fuel line does not change.

Ok... probably not electrical if it is that consistent. I presume you mean that you start it, let it sit untouched, and in about 2 minutes it just stops running?

Is the "stop" just a stop, like you turned off the key, or does it sputter or do anything else as it is stopping?

Here's a quick thing to try. Take off the gas cap.

Ok, I'll take off the gas cap tonight and see what happens. It runs for 2 minutes then dies like someone shut it off.

I start it and pull it out of the garage and it stops running in about 2 minutes.

It just dies, no sputtering.

Removing the gas cap had no effect, still cuts out after 2 minutes. I don't know that I have a ballast resistor. I replaced my ignition system with a newer dissy and igniter from a 1978.
