Good Afternoon All, Might seem like I should know this but other than an Oil Change what do you all do for checking/changing fluids? Also any lubrication points to check. Honestly I have just been out enjoying my 40 last couple of years mainly around town doing nothing but oil changes in the spring.

If you don't want your steering damper to die early, I would flip it 180 degrees so that water doesn't get trapped in the outer cover.

There are bunches of grease zirks. I use a manual gun loaded with Mystic JT-6.

I have a factory shop manual and a chiltons. I assume all the spots are in there?

It’s basically all of the fluids plus each steering component has zirc fittings to grease. 4 u- joints and two slip yokes on your drive shafts. Check your parking brake and adjust your drum brakes if they need it.

Good Info. Never really looked for the fittings. Parking brake seems to work great as do the front disc/rear drum brakes

This is a subtle flex right here. What do you mean you’ve just been enjoying it for YEARS. You missed posting a build thread with it stripped to the frame and you toiling away for 10 years off and on before finally getting to drive it around the block. How dare you come in here like you just wanted to freshen up a couple year old Corolla.

Ya I am a bit of a poser you could say. I have been a Toyota New Car manager for over 20 years. Both Kids worked for Toyota Corporate. Sons still there daughter moved on. So I can confidently say Toyota is in my blood, but yes I am no mechanic! Love this forum as members have talked me thru a starter replacement and a broken thermostat housing. Bought the 40 out of California where the PO had had a lot of stuff redone as he bought it as a bit of a project. So now I do get the luxury of just driving it and hopefully not breaking anything.

Probably a good idea to have your brake and clutch flushed and refilled with new fluid.

Good things mentioned, I also add grease (moly) to the knuckles once a year with a tire rotation. The other thing I do about every forth oil & filter change is to check my value clearances and replace my spark plugs, then double check my timing.

It's interesting, since a went to an FJ60 big cap dizzy and later model clamp, I haven’t had to touch my timing. We are talking a lot of years. Back when I had points I was always making small adjustments.

There’s a grease zerk on the center arm of the steering located on your frame right in front of the bib. Also top off any fluids where you have known leaks.

There's also a grease zerc in the 4x4 linkage. If you or someone else has changed the steering shaft u joints, the replacement parts may be greasable.
+1 for driving it, vs tearing it down for an overhaul...
Keep using that grease gun and you may never need the frame off...

So working for Toyota did you find the magic hidden room that holds the last remaining thermostat housings?
