How are these in the beef department? Durability behind 300+hp V8's? Available in both idler shaft sizes? Machining effect the case strength?

they're "bigger" than the gear sets in the orions. i have not seen any chipped or broken gear teeth in any orions, and i've worked on a few. i've also never seen a split case break due to the case failing. if have seen a few crack due to neglect; owners not rebuilding the case when the idler shaft went bad eventually leadiung to enough gear mis-alignment to cause the idler gears to break. they in turn then get wedged between the gears and case and something has to go.........

one of my current projects at the shop is a supercharged vortec in a 60. it puts out 450hp on 92 octane and so far the t-case has'nt had any issues whatsoever. i also have a split case in my vortec'd 80 and i beat the snot out of it at pismo. 2wd, 4wd, don't matter. it's help up just fine. i see no issues with case or shaft strength on the split cases.

the prototype set will be installed in my 80 within two weeks. then we'll find out for sure! :steer:

Georg,
If you were starting a build and needed an offset 4 to 1 case, which route would you go: these gears or the orion? (Nope, nothing planned on my end)

I'm going with the assumption that the adapters for a one piece and split case are the same price.

I'd do a split case and get stronger output shafts and eliminate the weak front cone of the 1 piece case.

that's a tough call. right now i could'nt answer that question in confidence since nobody has run the split case gears. on paper the split case would be the way to go. i have probably built 40 or more orions by now and i have three more sitting at the shop waiting to be built. i've also built quite a few stock early cases and a lot of split cases so i'm pretty familiar with all of them.

i guess we'll see what happens when i start putting some miles on my new gear set. it will be in my DD vortecd 80.

i'll tell you one thing though: i like split cases! i like them A LOT!!!!

alright, some mock-up pics.
the rear half needs to be clearanced for the larger idler and the larger low speed gears. realistically it'll take a fly-cutter with the case half bolted to a jig. i'll probably end up building a jig. i do have a bridgeport mill and whatever tools needed for the job so that won't be an issue.
the front case half requires no mods.

sorry about the crappy pics, digi needs a charge so the iphone had to do.

Just a little "shave job"? Nice!

That is not as much as I would have thought.

Very nice.

If it aint tight, it aint right.

Looks good.

It looks like the main shaft gears use the 60 type bushing not the 62 needles, correct? Either way it looks perfect for a 80 axled buggy.

hey michael.
yup, bushing supported gears. are you guys gonna come to the 2011 scc? hope so.

Unclear... It a long drive for us but we may try and get the crew back out there this year. We are focused on GSMTR right now.

Wow, that's tight, but it seems to fit. Looking forward to the rest of the pictures!

Only if you change to a main-shaft from a 40 or 60 split case. Everything else should be the same.

No sweat on that clearance job. Most could do that themselves.

I can't believe you still have that blower 60 in your shop.......

not so sure about the "do-it'yourself" job on the case. it's gonna get pretty close in the ribbed area. i might try to find a junk case and punch all the way thru it so see how much meat we're left with when then job is done. well, done "properly" anyways.

the blown 60 is still here. lots of fun to drive but as of tomorrow it'll finally be officially finished. lots of add-ons and repairs to work done previously by somebody else. i love re-doing other people's work! it should be going to the state ref late this week to get emissions certified and then it's finally outta here. that means some pocket money for me and room for my 80 to get a different split case! :bounce:

between 38mm split case and 62 split case there a difference . ? was under the impresion was the same ..

No--The 38mm case has bushing supported output gears, the 62/Auto trans case has roller bearing supported output gears.

Just an editorial, but these gears are the coolest thing to happen to the Land Cruiser world since the 30 spline LongFields. I want a set.

One other cool thought--Think about an 80 series with an A440/split case and these gears. That has got to be possible and would totally rock.

........different as in old style split case or 80 case with new gears?

I don't know much (nothing really) on the 80 series tcases, so would these gears work in them?

I would love more reduction on my HDj81.

Last hijack .. aren't the gears from 62 split case interchangeable with the BF1A ( late 40 and 60 ) split case gears ?

un lucky not .. are complete different t-cases ..

If they had the same size idler shaft they should be. Though I think the larger idler (38mm) started in 1985/6 after the FJ60 and FJ40.
