That looks to be a very enjoyable trip, which is now on the to do list.

Think FUEL, lots and lots of fuel!!!! Or just get a diesel engine.

That is for sure. This summer I am starting to save for a diesel and 5 speed swap. Plus figure out the aux tank on the forty. Only time will tell.

Enjoy it as it is now, but start doing what you can to save up for whatever it is down the road. 3B would probably be the least expensive, but if you have a chunk of change saved up then in a few years you can jump on something if it comes available at a good deal *cough*1HZ*cough*

1HZ would be pretty sweet, but a turbo 3B is most likely going to happen unless I get the same luck you did, but you never know. I just saw one go up for sale on MUD. Time to make friends with mine owners, that way I am the first to know when they are swapping out engines, so I can snatch one up. Plus there is plenty to do on the 40 this summer as the list keeps growing, and I am holding off on taking it down to the frame. I can also always dream of a Toyota diesel in my forty.

Dan,

Is it still possible to do the 'half-cut' thing you did to get that JDM motor for your faux-lux? Is that enough motor to push around a 40? Is it too complicated of a conversion for an old-school truck like a 40?

oh man... sign me up for next year. my own rig if it's up to snuff by then, or a tag along. looks like soo much fun...

Spector sells Land Cruiser half cuts. At some point they did offer the 1HZ, that might be a special order item though. Interesting idea on using a non Land Cruiser engine. Time to do some research.

I is so jealous.

The fall Moab trip will be a fall "Southern Utah" trip this year. Multi-day, remote camping, expedition style wheeling, with some highly technical sections. Make plans to attend and watch this forum for details.

You can indeed still get a half-cut, but for a 40 I'm not sure if I'd go that route. The only time I'd use a half cut were if there were a lot of complicated bits to make the engine work (like EFI). The Toyota diesels for the most part are simple enough that the rest of it is just "extra." A 1HZ simply has a fuel cutoff solenoid to command it "ON" or "OFF."

The 2LT-E that I used I wouldn't use in anything again. Frankly it just has too much of a head cracking problem (knock on wood, mine has been fine). The 1KZ-TE have been put into 40s (there's at least one on here, by toddm IIRC) and those guys say it works well. Those engines were found in mini-trucks and 70 series cruisers. The 2LT-E was as well, BTW (the LJ-78 has the 2LT-E, for instance). The biggest problems come because the mini-trucks use centered real axles and the cruisers obviously don't.

Good to know about the half cut. Right now the turbo 3B or the 1HZ are what I am looking at the most right now, but before I really say that I should read about all the pros and cons of all the Toyota diesels. Thanks for all the input.

OK, so what about something like the 12HT? Or a 1HD-T

oh sure, hijack my thread why doncha.... :-)

I was starting to wonder what this thread was about (after some hijacking of my own).

Should I go ahead and change the title? "Diesel Options for Wheeling in Utah"

Fuel (gasoline) on the fire

"I don't want to get into a huge debate here but having done LOTS of diesel conversions and LOTS of V8 conversions, the best choice is the V8. That is just my personal opinion. I personally am a huge diesel fan, especially the Toyota diesels. I have had lots of them and still own 4 Toyota diesels but the 5.3L Vortec V8 is the most economical conversion out there.

You will get more than 100k miles out of them (not sure where you came up with this #) and spend about 2/3 the cost of the diesel swap. Mileage will be about 20mpg compared to 22mpg for a Toyota diesel. With diesel fuel being about 20% more expensive than unleaded (where I am), it is more economical to drive the gasser. Of course this is not taking biofuels into consideration.

And then.... there is the parts issue. You are not going to find Toyota diesel parts very easily. Not as easily as you would a SBC.

Even though the SBC is a better choice, I'd still take a Toyota diesel anyday."

We are just discussing prepping our vehicles so we can do this very awesome trip.:D

LOL, you know, I looked at a Duramax Diesel engine today....that thing is uber quiet...wonder if that can be shoe horned into an 80 series :hhmm:
