How about aluminum tape over the crack, then JB Weld over the aluminum tape?

The alum tape may lose its bond as the oil seeps into the adhesive after the engine is running, and the oil is warmed up. At least that's what I think might happen. This is after the second day when all the oil stopped coming out of the crack, and the surface is dry and clean enough for the alum tape to stick.

You had a huge hole to repair in the field. No way to fix it out there. Your plan worked. Limp out and hope for the best. The field repairs I spoke about were small and not at the bottom of the component.
At some point , I have stopped exploring rugged areas, by myself. A tow strap hooked to another vehicle solves a lot of issues. Buddy up!!

When I clean everything up, I'll take a picture of the long crack. It was a doozy 😁.

We once “repaired” an oil filter with Water Weld and duct tape… Water Weld sets up in less than an hour and the tape kept it in place while it was setting up.

Hello, stranger! Hope you are well! :) :)
You're the 2nd to have mentioned it lately, I need to test out WaterWeld

Dang @alia176 good adventure! I never remember the trips where everything went as planned

So thankful that semi didn't drill you! A lotta death trap rigs on 550

I told them it was a '96 4runner and the system took it. Dude, that's a huge offer, thank you.🙏

Doode, Mine was a 97 that was towed from the same area…oh you meant Isabell’s 😉

If I ran out of oil to pour into the engine out in the bush, this would've been a very complicated situation. I'm not sure what the best course of action would've been. Perhaps walk to the hwy, hitch a ride into Bluff, buy all the oil they have then, hitch another ride back to the trailhead. Remember, I got Luka with me the whole time! I'd probably grab dinner and a motel if it got too late. Then walk back to the disabled 80, limp her into Bluff, then do the tow truck thing, maybe?

This is one of the many reasons why I carry a bike with me. If things go truly pear shaped I can relatively quickly and easily make my way back to civilization.

Glad it all worked out for you!

that's a sweet backup plan!!!

Alright, this project is done and Beastie is back on the road. Removing that upper oil pan took roughly about eight hours over a course of a week. I procured another one from another mudder from TX and moved everything over. The bump stops will be going on this weekend, then I'll hit the road for nowheresville.
