Ok guys, I've been web wheeling now for the last 3yrs since I was separated from my rig... But that day is soon to come to and end. So I figured it was time for me to share some stuff on the board once again. I've been following Tree-Roots build now for some time, and really wanted to upgrade the headlights ASAP when I got reunited with the rig. I was able to jump and score some Depo clear headlights, but even if thats not you, read on...

So here's what I've found out through ordering and reordering and laying it out on the floor.

1st I grabbed a set of these: Apexcone Raptor HID Kit (35w or 55w): HID Kits, DEPO Lights, BMW Bumpers & Lighting - DDM Tuning

Now for the cost you might get what you pay for... I got this link from Tree's post and he seems happy with them. I'm NOT looking to turn this into a throw and cut off post about the quality of light guys. That can be and has been discussed in great length in other posts. So simply stated it is what it is.

Now for the the cool part....

For those with standard lights, just order and install, heck the price is right. (may not be legal)

For us with the DEPO's, here's what you can do. The DEPO's are H4 and H1's hence we have an issue with our harness being 9005/ 9006's. These HID kit's have ballast's that are plug and play to 9005 / 9006's!!!

Meaning order your H4's and H1 kits, and just cut the H4/ H1 harness that converts it over to 9005/9006 and your done! See HID's all have the same plug's, at least these do. So no matter the bulb same plug. The bulbs plug to the ballast universal, the ballast is set to accept 9005/ 9006 already, just plug your 9005/9006 plug that used to go to your bulbs into the ballast and your done.

I came to this resolution after ordering a 9006 kit, thinking I could retro the light to accept the 9006 bulb. Then I ordered H4 bulbs and saw the connectors are the same. So i thought I'd have to part together kits to make a H4 / H1 into 9005 /9006 hybrid kit... Just not the case as these ballast are 9006 ballasts no matter the bulbs in the kit.

I hope this makes sense, here are a few pictures to illustrate. Again this may not be the best pattern or even a legal light spread. Take it as you may, use at your won risk. Just thought I'd share. Heck I've had plenty of Harbor Freight tools over the years... They work till they break... But the cost is right at the time!

Thats a drag lndcruz. Been slightly paranoid of that happening to mine after the
big depo dry out. I seem to remember a mention of some protective film for headlights.
Back on subject, thanks for the info Ammo, Depo + HID = awesome.
P.S Clown midget cracks me up!!!

How did this happen? Just a bad hit with a rock? The glass seems stout as I've had mine opened up like a clam shell now...

Just rocks or any object. My factory headlight got jacked up by debris from a log truck. I am a fan of plastic now. I honestly would switch the glass for plastic. Oxidation is an issue but clear headlight protectors can cure that with minimal light loss.

Yeah. I was behind a jacked up truck in the boonies without mud flaps and bam. I knew it had happened :frown:

I'm thinking about taking the headlight apart and trying to use that windshield chip repair kit but I'm worried about the glass shattering when I pop it apart.

O wow. I don't think it would shatter but i would have my factory lights on hand just incase. Like i previously stated i want to experiment and see if the plastic lens cover will fit instead of the glass. Only in the south big rigs have such little regulation!!!! I went through 3 sets of OEM headlights before i got my deer slayer/damage multiplier

Ok so if i'm reading this right. If I buy that kit for 29.95 it is just plug and play kit for my stock lights on the 80?

Yes sir, on a stock rig just buy the 9006 (lows) or 9007 (highs) kit or kits. Plug and play... I opted for the 35W for low and the 50W for highs like Tree did.

Stock highbeams are 9005.

Stock highbeams are 9005.

You are correct sir... However the plugs are the same on the back of the bulb, just the bulb is shaped diff I believe .

But then the 9007 bulb won't fit in the stock 9005 high beam slot, no?

I will edit the above to say 9005/9006... the ends or plugs remain the same. The 9000 line of bulbs all have the same plugs just the actual bulb is diff from what I understand.

You would order 9005's and 9006's and be plug and play into stock lights.

Depo users would order H4's and H1's and then be plug and play into stock wiring harness of 9005/ 9006

But the cutoff on the oem lights is going to be pretty bad and will probably blind oncoming traffic.

Indcruz,

So am I correct in explaining that these are pretty much plug and play for Depo guys into factory wiring H4 /H1 into 9005/ 9006 looms...

Yes, or I think so. My harnesses were converted to H4 and H1(the oem plugs are still there) before I used hid's. Plus I only have low beam hids and hids in my hellas.

Later tonight I can check and see if they will work that way.

On a side note did you buy H4 hi&low or just the H4 low without the shield? The Hi low setup is nice because it gives you a nice wide beam in high along with the H1 highs that act more like pencil beams. Also the H4 hi&low come with a nice shield that helps a lot with stray light.

vs something that looks like this. low only
