I was gonna say Slee, but there seems to be a significant price difference between MAF and Slee. $325 verses $378. Hmmmmm, may have to do some shopping. MAF claims to have the version with the antenna cut out, not sure what Slee has, but I would assume all new models have this?

MAF also sells precleaners, but I would assume this is just the tractor kind that you can probably find any at any implement farm parts store. I would be interested in knowing if the more descrete factory looking precleaner would fit the Safari snorkle and if they are available.

The factory OEM snorkel is also available in the US now, thanks to a mud member who had it added to the toyota parts system. If you do a search you can find the part numbers. I think there was a thread in one of the vendors section where you could buy the whole package.

lies. all lies.
the snorkel is only there to impress chicks.

All these other stories are just sad attempts at justification. :flipoff2:

seriously, though, I think that a snorkel falls neatly into the category of:

If you don't know if you need it, you don't need it.

Sorta like Lockers.

Maybe. I don't need a 80 series/Land Cruiser, but you will have to pry my cold dead hands off of mine to get it.

will have to do some research and thanks for the tip and the man-a-fre lead Socal80. I think if it makes jeep owners envious then its well worth it! cheers

A snorkel is like a winch. By the time you realize you need it, it's too lale. Don't know if I will ever get in a situation where I will use it for a water crossing. But it's piece mind knowing that durring a water crossing if I find a big hole, I am protected.

If anyone does "any" off roading and don't know if you need lockers...they'll find out the hard way. As far as the snorkle, as mentioned a few times, the water crossings are only one of many reasons...and probably far down the list for the vast majority of buyers.

Thanks to this thread I was reminded of my clogged filter and I'm going to place an order for one first thing Monday....

OEM filters are supposed to be washable, FYI. I need to do mine soon, for the first time.

Yep and thank goodness for that. Took advantage of it, after a dusty trip. I couldn't believe out much dirt came out of that filter!

Good to see ya posting around here a bit more Brian....now if you would only update your webpage!

I agree with you.
I *know* that I need a snorkel. And a winch. And lockers.

ie: I know that I drive my truck in situations where I end up with at least one headlight under water. I also know that I drive on dusty roads, every day. Hence, I need a snorkel.

My point was that plenty of people ask "do I need a snorkel?" ... obviously they aren't in situations where they think "Holy cow, I'm sure lucky I didn't pooch my motor when I drove through that river!"

Ditto with a winch. I've been stuck. Alone. Stuck enough to need a winch. So I know that a winch is on my list of "really should get that" mods. For folks who have never once gotten stuck, I'd say that they don't need a winch. Sure... someday they might get stuck. For that one time, the cost of a tow truck is a small fraction of the winch/bumper/extra battery... even if the tow is 200 miles, it probably costs under the $1,000+ that a properly set up winch will cost.

Same thing applies to most modifications: web-wheeling is a decent source of info, but it isn't anything like the real world. In the real world, people who use their vehicles usually see the benefits of a given mod, immediately, and can decide pretty easily if it is "worth it".

That's all. So if someone says "do I need a snorkel?" then probably the biggest benefit that they'll reap is the chick magnet effect. otherwise they wouldn't have to ask.

I didn't realize that the OEM filter is washable.... can you explain? I hit mine with air once in a while-- much dirt flies off. But I've never actually washed it. Now that I think of it... I don't have a Toyota element. Might be worth upgrading if it really can be washed out.

Thankfully the stock OEM filter is cleanable.

Snork is down on my list of to do mods, but can also be important for hot climates like My Nevada and Arizona - Air temp is up to 10* cooler at top of car than street level. I think one other poster mentioned it, but cooler air helps - cooler engine = safer head gasket. Then there is the dust and water thing...;p

My list goes this way, may delay until divorce::D

1. Locker (rear)
2. Snorkel
3. Bumper
4. Winch

The main reason for the snorkel... see the picture.

PS Forgot the OME Lift Kit...

I could benefit from a snorkel. I was in this exact situation not too long ago. Note to self: quit showing off :grinpimp:

Plus, I usually take up the rear in a line while wheeling, so I tend to eat a lot of dust... My handle on the CB is "Caboose" :o

Mine came with a tiny K&N and it was the first thing I replaced lol

Went with an OEM and it's more than twice the size!!

The OEM filter has washing instructions printed on it (in many difference languages lol)

Basically, you shake the dirt out or blow it out with compressed air, then submerge it a few times in a bucket with clean water.

Toss the dirty water, refill and repeat until the water remains clean after submerging.

Shake out the water from the filter, then let it air dry before reinstalling
