Does anyone have a picture of what the end of this cable should look like?

I've seen a number of A440F pictures but not the A343F.

And does anyone know if I were to find a new end connector, would splicing work?

I believe the part I need is NLA and the A440F cable is too short.

Yes, the A343 kickdown cable is nla.
I happen to have mine disconnected today. The cylinder on the end is 10 mm wide and 4.5 mm in diameter. It might be possible to braze a new fitting on the end.
A custom cable could probably be made if your housing is still in good shape.

Thank you!

@florida95fzj : There's a few options if you want to fix the barrel fitting/stop:

Dimensions of the cable stop/fitting:

(from above) 10mm x 4.5mm = 3/8" x 3/16" = 0.39" x 0.177"

Throttle (Transmission) Cable diameter ~ 0.06"to 0.07" = ~1.5 to 1.7mm (diameter of hole needed in repair stop/fitting)

Some different sizes/types of repair fittings/stops:

IMHO if you use one of the quick repair stops with a screw to pinch the wire consider adding a drop of solder to secure it all together

So, what is the best way to install the barrel into the throttle body?

It looks like the cable is routed underneath unlike the cruise and accelerator cable.

I haven’t found a great position to get the best access. I think it goes in at a notch at the firewall side but doesn’t really fit that way.

This pic has the broken barrel still installed that I have since removed to compare to the new cable end from a T100. Identical size.

Edit: the barrel is installed vertically here but I am wondering if it should be installed horizontally through the circular cutout that faces the firewall. Either way, I could not get the new barrel to fit after trying a few hours. Access to the area is a challenge.

IIRC you have to move the cable end past the hole where the stop fits into (there's a slot for the cable to slide into from the side) or rotate the throttle linkage until you can push the stop into the slot then ensure the cable lays into the curved groove thingy. It's hard to describe, study it awhile. Might be easier if you unbolted the TB from the intake but IIRC that's not necessary.

Photo below is not from a FZJ80, just added it to show how a cable stop or barrel end fits into the slot on a Toyota Throttle body

Approaching from the side you first have to rotate the barrel end/stop and cable in line with the slot (see red arrow), then push barrel end in where the slot is, then direct the cable into the groove.

Thanks @Kernal

I'm not sure why I am having so much trouble other than the space is not very large to reach in with your hands. I replaced the accelerator cable not too long ago and it installed just like you're showing in the pictures.

I don't know if the slot in my throttle linkage is bent although the PO definitely had the stop jammed in 90 degrees off from the way it should be installed.
I will keep at it between rain downpours.

My issue was the area on the TB where the stop is installed was bent.

Temporarily, I ended up buying a cheap throttle cable on eBay for a T100. Was $30. I cut the end and spliced it to my cable. I never could find an exact match for the stop so that I could just replace that part.

edit: the T100 cable 35520-35230 is 140cm from edge to edge of the sheath. I am going to revisit this as a possible replacement.

For anyone searching, my original symptom was really harsh shifting especially from 1-2 and 2-3. There was also a harsh mechanical sound on occasion when shifting. I guess the A343F really needs variable pressure based on the throttle position.
