Smoke at startup

93 fzj80 .. I have a pretty good puff of smoke at startup after setting for 8+hours. Just did a compression test that showed normal readings other than cylinder 2 having about twenty psi less than its brothers. Did HG and head seals about 25,000 mi ago.. she runs pretty well other than the initial plume. Im wondering if it's a worn valve stem or corresponding seal. Now if I can ask, what would you do if you were me?

It's white. And interestingly enough, if I park with the front end lower than the back, it doesn't seem to smoke as much or at all...

Mine does the same, most likely it’s the valve guides.

If you recently did the head and valve guide seals it should not be leaking by. Easy test would be a combustion gas test in the coolant. That would rule out head gasket leaking. Did you do the head or a shop? I only ask because if the block or head was not sufficiently cleaned up it could be leaking again.

It doesn't have a noticeable smell, local weather has been relatively dry, and it doesn't smoke for more than a couple seconds.. after that I don't notice any smoke until the next time I start it after several hours.

A local shop did the head prep, I did the rest. I could have definitely done something wrong. I didn't use OEM gaskets for one thing.

My local Toyota dealer just quoted me over 600 bucks for valve guide seals..

Mine does the same, PO used non-OEM Valve Seals during his head gasket job.

I just purchased the OEM seals from PartSouq, they weren't too bad:

Sounds like a mistake or a very high mark-up over Toyota Retail (which some dealers do, in my area it's now ~20% mark-up)

Example (1FZFE):

Toyota retail pricing for (Valve Stem Oil) Seals

Intake: 90913-02096 $13.25ea x 12 =$159
Exhaust: 90913-02105 $16.52ea x 12 = $198

Total for 24 Seals: $198+$159 = $357 Retail pricing

There are many sources for discounted parts.

Could your dealer have given you a price for Valve stem guides (bushings)??

Valve stem bushings (guides): 11123-66020 (Exhaust) and 11122-66020 (Intake) are ~$21ea x 24 + ~$500 (add 20% mark-up = $600)

To help avoid ordering mistakes IME it helps to find the correct part number first then go into your local dealer (or vendor) and politely give them the number (they can/should cross-check it of course).

I thought it was a mistake but narrowed it down as much as I could without making him feel insulted. I won't be going with them in this case. Thanks for the info

I've never ordered from Toyotapartsdeal but you can use their website to help find part numbers and get an idea of what other
discount companies charge. Partsouq (see above) or Amayama have good prices on many parts so helps to shop around. Oriseman Toyota in the US (Virginia) still gives a good discount but there may be other Toyota dealers closer to you that have an online store.

Cruiserteq (cruiseroutfitters) is over your way and carries OEM and quality Japan made parts.
