Did you hear it snap?? I snapped a front Dana 44 in my Ford once and man you can hear that 🤔🧐😯.

Bob, I heard something, but was trying to pass a tree hauler on a hill and when it happened the engine's rpms went through the roof. I couldn't remember what it sounded like, if that makes sense. Something loud for a second then it was like the clutch was pushed in, going nowhere.

Just glad you OK. Ya with the truck beside ya you dont know what to think, was it truck or you, then ya realize when she starts revving. Might want a metallurgist look at 🤔🧐 or @J Mack 😘🤣
 
Here's what the trip was all about, 35 solar panels in Savanah, Ga. See the 2" ball hitch we had to make to convert from the pintel hitch I had on there., just to get the trailer home. All the box vans have the 2" ball and no receiver, just welded on ball. I figured I'd save on shipping and have a fun time.... :rofl:

RCV defaults to 4340 unless you specify 300M but we agree The Scraps doesn't do anything to break an axle under normal circumstances.
This failure is something different, I've broke a dozen axles doing dumb stuff and not once did they make a clean break like Ron's picture. The fact that hub and bearings failed to the point they did says we had more than one failure going on here.
 
No, not 300M. The way I understood it, 300M is a stronger metal, but not as enduring, wears faster than the 4340. Is that close to correct?
 
So, looking at that chart, is 300m worth the difference in price for the average guy? Them seem pretty close on most things and some the 4340 is better, but I not sure of what all that means going down the highway.
 
My opinion from what I've seen of the wreckage, looks like the bearings were perhaps set up too loose and the misalignment of the hub to the axle/carrier caused the axle to have to bend which eventually snapped it.
Of course, I'm not there, so I may be missing something
 
Damn Scraps, I’ve never seen that happen on a FF (always the splines in the diff). I’ve seen an 80 SF break like that, but it was welded running 37s and bound it under a rock lip. It takes crazy stress to break a 4340 chromo in my experience. Now fretting about the Nitros in my 40 I installed to not have this ever happen again 🫤
