I was able to snap this while I was there. I hated to see it 😥. Glad you made it home buddy. I’m thinking the hotshot guy is the same guy I paid to go pick up my lx450 in Kentucky. I hope it makes it there ok!

As sad as that is, thanks for posting. So much was going through my head right then I didn't think to take pictures. I really didn't look the body damage over much, but did see the paint was rubbed off and black marks from the tire. We'll know when ( if ) it gets home.

Yeah, it's sad to look at. When it gets home we need to figure out what and why it happened. I don't want to go through that again. Front Range finally got a hold of me, so I'll be talking with them about the axle shaft. Could the bearings go south and heat the shaft up to make it snap? Bearings were packed @ two years ago off the top of my head.

I'm not sure yet, I haven't pull the shaft, but I think it just snapped right at the hub and then super heated the bearings and all came apart? Maybe the other way around, bearing failure first without me hearing it then snapping the axle?

Okay, so the axle shafts were never actually removed for inspection.

Trying to wrap my head around 2 - 3 different problems with corresponding events that took place simultaneously.(?)
I’m wondering how far the hub bearing jamb nuts would have to come loose in order for the axle splines to disengage from the locker/carrier.(?)
Was the brake caliper and rotor dragging so hard that it caught fire? Heated up the bearings and caused them to seize? Weakened the axle which was still being driven by the locked diff causing it to break?
That’s what I’m coming up with. Maybe some, maybe none…🤔

Of course, if the splines were disengaging, then that eliminates the theory of the shaft being broken by the rotational force of the diff. The brakes should have held the hub and axle in place for awhile. The smell of burning brakes would have been unmistakable.

If it wasn’t brakes, then it would have to be bearings. And that would make a pretty unmistakable noise.

Also can’t understand how an axle would just break driving down the road (if it’s breaking was what the original problem was). I’ve heard that’s a pretty unmistakable sound too.

Sorry, thinking out loud

I just don't know at this point what happened until I can look a little more at it. My biggest mistake was not taking it apart myself before driving it. No brake smell at all, good brakes. No bearing noise as you would think. The shop said when the axle cap was removed and they tried it, the shaft wasn't turning. I believe that's the sound ( axle snapping ) I heard when it first happened. How did the hub come off? I need to see everything and try to wrap my brain around it.
