Sleeping Platforms w/o removing backseat?

The swissroombox is soooo sweet! But you check out the cost of that thing? Forget that.

I went in a different direction since I am in the desert southwest. There is a 7 foot roof rach on my 60. So, I put in a 3/8 inch plywood floor and sleep up there on an air mattress. This leaves all my gear inside and I have more room on top since I am 6'3". The only downside is remembering where I am when waking at night to relieve myself. It is a long way down. So I tie a rope over me to remind myself. There is room enough for two if both are careful and tied on.

The deck also acts kind of like a sun shield during the day with air passing between the deck and the roof.

It would be possible to set up one of those car tents up there if mosquitos or rain were an issue which they are not here.

For a bit I had two 1.5' x 3.5' solar panels mounted on my 4runner's factory roof rack bars. It dropped the daytime interior temperature a noticeable amount.

That is correct, however the wheel wells reduce the available area considerably. To maximize the sleeping area you need to make a platform above the wheel wells.

There's still plenty of width between the wheel wells to sleep comfortably, IMO, so you don't really need to make any modifications. I'm 6'5" and have to go diagonally, so if you're taller it might be a problem.

I still use (and sleep like a baby on) the simmons beautyrest futon mattress, but I have a couple of ideas for something nearly as comfortable at half the thickness. Even though head room isn't an issue the bed roll takes up more space than I like. The storage platform weighs 42 pounds and can be removed in about 5 minutes, but is secured in case of inprobable rollover. The front flip hinges on the 2nd row were cut out to lower the leading 2nd row seat edge by 2 inches creating a nearly flat surface on the same plane as the storage deck. I use a mildew proof cover that goes over the the top section of the truck to keep it dark inside, but no photos. Maybe I'll remember to take more pics next time I use it though it's been a couple of years since I camped last.

I went with the board over the second row seats the first couple of times but it was just a total pain in the ass setting up. So now I just use those foam mats that go together like puzzle pieces and then I put the camping air mattress on top of those.
