We all know what tanks these vehicles are especially when we armor up like so many do, I just wanted to show everyone why I drive Land Cruiser and will continue to do so. My wife was driving through an intersection when a 2009 Camry coming from the opposite direction made a left turn into her lane, the driver was cited for failure to yield. Posted speed limit was 45 mph, my wife did not have time to react and never touched the brakes. The other driver had some minor injuries and elected to be transported, my wife suffered no injury other than some soreness in here neck and back.

Initially the damage didn’t look too bad, however both air bags deployed and insurance quoted $4500 to replace them. Insurance is claiming it as a total loss since it will be over 70% of the vehicle’s value, so now I get to start pulling off parts and begin searching for a replacement. Looks like I will be upgrading the factory bumper on our 80 now too. Maybe Slee will offer a discount for two... Wonder if Christo will warranty this one…

Too bad its a total. At first I thought it was a newer 100 (with the headlights) but seeing that it is a 2000 that doesn't surprise me.

Looks driveable? Can't tell if that's your coolant or just wet ground.

I believe it was still running and my wife turned it off, yeah the airbox was destroyed, and radiator did purge itself. Headlights/grill are 2006 model, some of you may recognize this rig, purchased from Mud member last year. So we didn't even get 10k miles out of it...

First off - glad (!) your wife and the other driver are okay.

I've read that the only area the 100 doesn't do great in the crash tests is the offset front impact - the front occupant's (driver is typical off-set) legs can suffer some "damage". But... I have theorized (as I explain to my wife why we "need" a winch bumper on the 100) that the steel bumpers distribute the impact across the front - reducing the intrusion... and saving (my) legs.

Your 100 looks like a solid point in the Steel Bumper Adds to 100 Safety column.

Glad is OK. Based on posts I've seen here, LC/LX's tend to survive wrecks much better than most cars. Mass, in most cases, tends to overcome inertia.

NOT that it has anything to do with your truck, but I was re-ended at about 5 mph while stopped, obeying a "Yield" sign, by an idiot in a Corolla. "Damage" to mine was fixed in 5 minutes with newspaper and a can of gloss black to touch up the trailer hitch. The Corolla's hood was folded back halfway to the windshield, and the frame crumpled back about a foot. Tow truck time.

She was such a pretty 100 too.

Now both of my Land Cruisers have suffered the same fate.

These total easily because they hold their value so well. $4000 in damage was enough to total my silver one worth $16000. I also only got 10k out of that one.

As unfortunate as it is, seeing how the aftermarket bumpers fair in accidents is a good mental data point.

Slightly off topic, but serious question: I sometimes see these threads and notice that Stateside, there is a general consensus that as far as safety is concerned, "bigger is better". I live in a town with lots of US expats, many of whom often complain that we drive such tiny cars here (I am in NL) and that we drive far too fast for their comfort. Which is fine, "horses for courses".

Looking at the stats however, the US is (far) less safe than pretty much all of the EU (that have comparable small cars and high driving speeds).

But compared to the EU, the US drives huge cars. Even a Camry (never sold in my country) is considered a large car. Does anyone have any thoughts on why that is, that despite driving large cars (and generally driving slower), the (fatal) accident incidence is much higher ? And clearly, the "arms race" for bigger and heavier and "tank like" cars does not lead to more safety, as the stats show.

At the risk of overstating: I am not judging but asking a serious question, so please don't take this as some sort of anti-US topic.

That is scary to see all that twisted steel, but really gratifying knowing that it did exactly what it was supposed to, allowing the fragile/valuable components to walk away.
