I can see that I am going to have lots of questions with my 73 FJ40 that I recently brought home so I figured I would consolidate them in one single thread. I'm impressed with the many immaculate 100 point restorations here but my project will be about turning my neglected cruiser into a rough and ready vehicle once more. A little back ground, This Fj has passed through a lot of hands but was used for a number of years as a lift maintenance vehicle at a local ski area. It has a spring over axle swap, 350 Chevy V8, SM420 transmission and a stock transfer case. Full roll cage and Warn winch. The rust on it is not all that bad, I'd say the worst is on the rear barn doors. The wiring harness is burned to a crisp so I will be replacing that. It also has a Holley electronic fuel injection kit and I'm going to see if it can salvaged. I'm going to post a few pictures including another LC that I like enough to want build mine like that. My hard top I will fix and spiff up enough for winter use.

My first question: I need new felt guides in the side door window channels. A resto Co. quoted a small fortune for replacements. So being a less then 100 pt. resto has anyone used generic reasonably priced fell guides that will fit

You know with your screen name you're sort of giving away your age. :)

Then again, by knowing it I guess I'm giving away my age as well!

Today I made an abbreviated wiring harness , just enough to get the engine running along with an oil and filter change as the oil was black. I got it fired up and the 350 sounds pretty healthy but there was a bit of vibration, I found one of the fuel injectors was plugged and the probable cause of the vibration as that sets the mixture a bit off for one bank of cylinders. I shut it down with the intention of cleaning the plugged injector and happened to glance under the vehicle and noticed a puddle. Sure enough the gas tank was leaking. I pulled the tank and found not one but three small holes after I scraped away the rust and scale, I thought about patching it but I think the better solution is to bite the bullet and get a new one, Cool Cruisers has what looks like some nice replacements and I'll give them a call tomorrow. I'll be redoing fuel lines and filters as long as I'm this far into it.

I spent some time under the Cruiser too greasing all the zerks and checking U joints. A look at the differentials and transfer case and transmission shows a need for fresh oil in all the units .

I'm waiting on a new window regulator for the drivers door and a master cylinder for clutch. As all these things come together I'm looking forward to being able to take it out for a test drive

Time to top off the steering knuckles while I'm waiting for my new gas tank to arrive, but I cant find the recommended lube to use. I do see traces of grease when I remove the plugs but figured I'd ask what I should be using in the knuckles?

Moly grease is what you want in the knuckles.
