who on this forum was skipping the birf maintanence, how is it going (have they blown) and what milage are they up to now?

When I bought my 93 FZJ80 with 140k on the odometer the passenger side birf had never been touched, the drivers side had been monkey'd with, but as far as I could tell- the passenger side was virgin. I have since done a complete re-build.

didn't skip it.. just did it ... very noticable differnce in the wear pattern in fwd vs reverse direction of the bell.... next time i'll swap sides but since this is my wife's 80 and not heavily wheeled i'll not worry too much about it for now...

172,*** miles now and just clicking in low range ........ figure when the kids can climb in and out by themselves we'll go bigger and replace then then.... maybe at 200,000 miles

nah, i don't even own a 80, just, i remembered a thread where one member was going to run them as long as he could without maint, i was just checking up on that (could have been e999999)...

Part of having a vehicle like this and having it last 300,000 miles is doing preventitive maintenance. I don't know why someone would intentionally run it like that unless he was going to sell it soon.

I read that too and think it was meant to be a joke.

It was not a joke and it was not e99999999. The guy still hangs in the 100 section though he chickened out on the long term abuse errr test. He traded his 80 and bought a (ughhh) 4-Runner.

His name is Pitbull.... Apropos.

114k and my guess is that they've never been touched. I've owned it since 94k miles. Doubt I'll have time to do it anytime soon. Can't even find time to put on the OME coils & shocks sitting in my garage. Don't have any major seepage issues but I'm aware that doesn't mean everthing is OK. Whatta ya think, wait as long as I can? How long you think I could make it before I have clickety click trouble?

Dunno.

Um, do you like driving a time-bomb?.....................

New OEM birfs are 600 bucks a rattle......

Guess I'll find out as I have too many projects stacked in front of doing the birfs. If I can make it until summer I should have some time. I could be the new guinea (sp?) pig since Pitbull chickened out and bought a 4-runner.

Jason you'll be fine until summer dude, you've checked your grease level, right? As long as they're wet and you don't push them that hard don't worry about it. Most 80's got their first knuckle jobs around 120K.. of couse if I'm wrong I'm glad I live 2 states away. :)

Yes, grease level is good and I've had most fluids changed out regularly. I keep a pretty close eye on that. I'm not sweating it. I find I enjoy my 80 way more if I don't worry too much about it. Birfs and starter contacts are about all I have left to do to head off the common problems.

I'm at 135k and they haven't been redone. I keep a close eye on the diff fluid and knuckles but no issues so far. I have the parts and will get around to doing it at some point.
