I've been keeping this 3 D cell Maglite in this location in my wife's 98 LC for the last 6 years (with mild wheeling) and in my 98 LC for the last couple of years with more extensive wheeling. I have never had it fall out of the vehicle, rattle, bounce or anything else in that time. It's almost amazing, one wouldn't think that it would be so secure in that location.:D

  • It's extremely easy to get to.
  • Easy to check if it needs batteries.
  • Secure location.
  • Nothing to buy.
  • Nothing to strap, tie or bolt.
One thing I do need to do is convert it to the Maglite LED bulbs. :hhmm:

Funny I've always kept my mag light there too - prob one of the first things I put in my 100. Never thought about it much but it has been really convenient - mine sits on top a pair of leather work gloves that stay in the truck. I got a newer LED mag light a couple years ago as a gift I swapped to that stays in the 100 full time now and I upgraded the bulb in my old maglight to a LED bulb as well. Sometimes I carry both lights stacked reversed on top of each other. You never realize how important something simple like a flashlight is until you don't have one.

I've seen some people that store them there add mounting brackets to keep them from sliding forward and jamming the brake pedal from being pushed down.

My two bits.

I've never had it slide on to my floor board yet, and that includes stopping short enough to have the ABS enact, nor have I been down anything steep enough for it to move from its position.

But I guess, one can never be too careful, for sure in a roll over, I can easily see that thing konking me in the head.;)

That Maglite may have been hip in 1998 when your LC was new, but it's time to step into the light. Pick up a surefire!

Or even more practical, pick up a headlamp so you can use both hands when trying to do something in the dark. Either option will easily fit in the hundy console or glove box.

My and :princess:'s 3 d-cells are so old I cannot remember...both have been bulletproof since new.

I'd had a ton of trouble with mini-maglights ( 2 AA and 3 AA variants)...switch seems to die so that the only thing I see when I turn them on is a very quick flash as I start to rotate the bezel, then darkness as I continue. I've gone through 4 so far, both regular and led.

The headlamp is invaluable. Sierra Trading Post has decent prices.

Warranty = useless v. price of the maglite.

I actually keep a headlamp attached to both the driver and passenger seat headrest so if we ever needed it quickly we could just slip it off and put it on our heads. That combined with a focusing/tactical 1,000 lumens LED flashlight next to the driver's seat, a 200 lumens LED flashlight in each of the door pockets, 2 more LED headlamps in the very back of the truck and a 500 lumens in the back cargo area makes for a pretty complete setup...and my girlfriend thinks I have a problem :hillbilly:

Agreed. I had a triple D-cell MagLite in my truck (in clips) when I took it apart, but it's not gonna get re-installed when I put the interior back in. The 4Sevens Quark in my pocket is much brighter, more reliable, and much more convenient.

If it's bright enough for you then please ignore me, if it ain't broke don't fix it. That Mag Incandescent probably puts out 30-40 Lumens. If it ever breaks on you the newer CR123 LED lights out there are putting out over 300 Lumens and last just as long. They also fit in the palm of your hand. Every year they get brighter and brighter.

The Maglie Magtech lights seem pretty cool, however you can't go wrong with Surefire.

A few years ago I bought a 3 pack of 100+lumen led lights from Costco. Other than the battery holders occasionally breaking, I prefer them for a couple reasons: they are much smaller, they last forever on the AAA batteries, and I can easily stuff it in the center console. THey are cheap, work well, and I basically put them in various places in the car, truck, and house so one is always handy.

I keep a 3-d mag light in the door pocket as a backup. Serves as a good hammer/weapon/lantern too. I tend to like the more compact LEDs. I have a nice one (sure fire maybe) but it's actually annoyingly bright, esp when my kids get their hands on it, so it stays in the glovebox.

Thanks! I like the location. I keep a 2 cell Mag in the glove box. Had to buy a 2 cell cuz the 3 cell wouldn't fit! If I'd thought if this idea, I could have saved the cost of the 2 cell!

Was thinking the same thing when I read the OP. Got an LED in the glove box. Going to put a headlamp in there too.

But there are lots of uses for a heavy 3-d mag too, right? #justsayin

Anyway, thanks for the link to the brackets on Amazon - didn't even think to look for those. But that's a nice find.

Lots of good ideas in this thread. Thanks.

I would like to see people use the fancy new crazy lumen lights for defense.

Personally I have the newer AAA LED flashlights and they definitely have a place. But I will never get rid of my 3-D mag. Call me old fashion!

I've had a 3D mag at the bottom of my glovebox forever. I might try it in that new spot. But you got me excited about the maglite again and I decided she deserved to be brought into the modern era.

Should be lumens enough, while keeping all the other great qualities we love the mag for.

If anyone is looking to get crazier, there are tons of mods to bring the maglite into the 1k lumens torch territory.

I upgraded my mag lights to LED a few years ago..and they are much brighter. Still not as bright as a Surefire or my Cree. I have an LED headlamp and a couple of other smaller LED lights stashed in my rig as well, a couple of them have magnets on them, so the can stick to the car anywhere there's metal! They are great for camping, I can quickly hand everyone some form of light source in a snap. I like this suggested spot for the mag-light and good call on the clips on Amazon as well!

Quick question how would someone fasten those clips in that place? Would you have to drill in the frame? Or could you place a board below the carpet that the screws could mount into? I love the spot I just want to have it firmly attached (just for those role over situations).
