Should my 3fe go 80-85 mph?

My 92 LC is for sale. It has OME medium, and 33" Bridgestone MT's. After coming back from a road test, they asked how fast i drive it on the freeway? I said about 70-75, which is the truth. He said they couldn't get it past 65 with their foot buried to the floor. I know Puzzled, I took them out on the freeway and I got it up to 70 no prob. After laying in bed this morning, I was thinking that with the 33"s my speedo is incorrect, and it IS a 3fe . Do I bring my GPS and show him that we are actually going faster thatn 65?!! His friends 92 is stock, with some god awful 18" chrome rims. Your thoughts?

Joshua,

You're going 6% faster than indicated assuming you have not regeared or installed the little plastic transfer case gear to correct the speedo.

The OME lift will cut down on top speed though I don't think it would drop the top speed by 20MPH. Do you have a roof rack?

when my 92 was stock I did 90mph. Now with 35's and 2 tons of crap on it, the top speed as recorded with my GPS was 82mph.......down hill of course

With 33's you're going about 10% faster than the speedo says. Bring your GPS.

87mph on the GPS with 35s in my 91 on the flat with stock gears Friday night. It was the perfect temp and air mass, it really wanted to go that fast. I wasn't even in it half throttle. Typically I run 78mph on the interstate in it. When my speedo says 60mph I'm doing 72mph on the GPS.

As the maximum legal limit is 75 MPH what legal justification is there for more that that?

Any way, if someone comes in our shop and says they have a vibration at 90 mph, we say "that's nice, do you plan to pay the fine we will get on the test drive?"

I'm a smart ask sometimes. Dan's comment about vibrations at excessive speed reminded me of a post I sent to the LCML a few years ago (see below). Also, Dan at the time as long as it was daylight I was legal (Montana). There were several 40 series owners having a discussion about vibrations with Swampers, SOA, etc... at speeds of 75-80mph. Boy did I get the email. My favorite response was Mark Whatley's posted below. I guess I still don't have a handle on email/BBS punctuation.

The vibration is caused by your guardian angels and every shred of
common sense, responsibility and sanity jumping ship and diving for
cover.

If you are really looking for a real answer, then consider that at
speeds of 90mph and above it will be just about impossible to damp out
the various vibrations of these kind of tires (never designed or
intended for high speeds), ANY wear in ujoints slip joints or pinion
bearings, any less than perfect balance of the shafts, or even inbalance
of the wheels/tires (I doubt that your tire shop tries to get 33 inch
All Terrains to rotate perfectly at speds of over 100mph.

The fact that it occurs and re-occurs at different speeds would led me
to suspect that you are experinceing a harmonic caused by imbalance of
tires (most likely), rather than worn joints or bearings.

The best solution... buy a sports car for highspeed travel, not a
station wagon on steroids.

Yeah, that guy was smoking crack!! I drove my LUXURY 3FE to work today, and according to my GPS, I was cruising at 87 mph no prob. I would have tried to go faster, but in the stretch of 101 between San Jose and Gilroy, there's a shedload of CHP!! I just takes a while to get up to speed, but once it's up there, it's fine. I started getting sentimental on the way to work, I don;t want to sell it!! I want to keep both of my 80's!!

on an uncorected speedo with 33" bfg atkos I hit 78 on the speedo on the way in today. sure it takes a while but I am generally not in a hurry. admittedly when I looked down and saw the speedo I let off the gas and got back down to 70. so by -B-'s math at 78 I was really doing 82.68. and my average commute speed of 64 is really 67.84. If they are worried about speed tell em to get a chit box accord and put a big cold air intake on it!!!

The 6% difference is between 31" and 33" tyres. The FZJ80 came stock with 31's but I'm not sure what was stock on the FJ80's so the number could be different. There is a great site somewhere that computes the differences based on tyre sizes, gear ratio, speed, etc.

fwiw I believe the stock size for fj80 was a 31". at least that was what was on my 92 when I bought it. Not a big deal for me but for those who are interested.
