Shipping From Salt Lake

I am currently in the process of picking an aux tank for my forty. It is located in Salt Lake and I am seeing if anyone is going out that way anytime soon. Already working on shipping quotes.

Or what my best options are to ship. It has been pulled for about a week, but I am worried about what shipping companies would say about it smelling of gas. It is about 36" wide 19" deep and 14" tall. Could I just have him bag it a couple times and then box it?

As someone who has spent a lot of time hauling freight around, Don't just try to get around the DG and Hazmat rules. You don't know what else might be loaded into that truck or airplane (or even WHAT vehicle it would be loaded in), and that is specifically why the Hazmat rules are such a big deal. There are pressure changes, loads shift, can easily get damaged loading, or may react badly with other DG loaded nearby.

We hauled a lot of really crazy stuff around, but we always knew it was there, and could separate the stuff that needed to be separated--separate. The scary stuff was the undeclared DG.

Your best bet is to try MUDship. If you could get it to Denver I'd haul it down for you too. You could also see if someone could purge it of gas (I think radiator shops can do this).

I understand what you are saying. Is there a special way to package it or a carrier that will take it? I remember when I thought I needed ship my carb I was told to wrap it up and carbs and gas tanks are classified under the same thing. I don't want to cause any issues shipping it. I will see if it I can get it to Denver.

Talk to a shipper. They will know how to do it. It might not be cheap though. You could talk to even Kinkos, they should have someone trained on it, at least a bit.

I'm pretty sure you can have a fuel tank purged with an inert gas, boiled to clean it, maybe even filled with it and capped somehow for shipping. I KNOW we carried used gas tanks, but I don't know how they shipped, I just knew what our paperwork said.

Thanks for the information. Now I just need to find a shipper. My dad and I are also considering just making it a fun quick trip.

Thats true, but I was able to swing it into a family trip with lunch in Moab. Recommendations for lunch there? I am picking it up on Sunday night.

Lots of options - Moab Brewery would be good for lunch. Moab Diner is good for breakfast. There's a pretty good Mexican spot. I could drive to it, but I don't recall the name. Have fun!

La Hacienda at the north end of town. Considering they are Utah they have good green chile. DO NOT go to the Mexican place in the middle of town on the west side of the highway.

I ended up eating at Moab Brewery and it was good. Now I really want to make it out there in the forty. Having the extra range from the tank will be nice as well. Just need to clean it up and plumb it.

And if you do, don't eat the chorizo burrito. (Probably a good idea anywhere in Utah seein's as how they don't do Mexican food very well anyway.)
