A quick camping/wheeling/hiking trip to Goose lake over the weekend. The lake is at 11.6K, and the hiking to the top of Gold Hill Was 12.7 k. We got there Friday night around 9:00 p.m., and had the whole place to ourselves. Another beauty of pulling in late is that all the douchecarts have already come down from the lake so you don't have to worry about passing each other on the shelf road.

The hike on Gold Hill trail takes you to the top of the ridge that you see from the lake, then you connect to the pioneer Creek trail and make a loop out of it. Hike was around 8 mi, and the climb up to 12.7 k from the lake level was no joke! We should have packed more food and water. The downside of this hike is that you get dumped onto the same dirt road FR486 that people are driving up and down on. It's a bit of a nuisance to have to deal with traffic while you're hiking, but it is what it is. The arrow is pointing to where we were parked and camped.

As always, the stars were spectacular Friday night. If we weren't tired after a long Friday, we considered doing a moonlit hike.

There was a snow squall and a severe wind event that took place back in December of 2021. You can see from the pics that tons of trees were uprooted and the hiking trail had to be rerouted around them. It was an impressive show of mother nature, and what she is truly capable of. I am used to seeing avalanche destructions, but never seen wind destructions. There were several trees that had their branches stripped off of all leaves

Mother nature doesn't mess around! A snow squall and a severe wind event back in to 2021 caused a lot of destructions. I'm not sure if I can relay the devastations we saw merely with words but let me tell you, it was amazing. Most of us has seen the effects of avalanches and how they mow down trees like toothpicks. I've never seen trees fallen in every directions on a relatively flat/level ground. Often times trees fell uphill! Lots of branches were stripped of leaves, and this forest was a mess, to say the least.

I backpacked thru there at the end of June on the NNML and hiked over lot’s of blowdown trees back to S.F! Extremely beautiful and challenging, but very rewarding!
