Now that I've worked on my third Subaru vehicle, I'm getting very proficient and confident at doing timing belts, engine re-sealing, water pump, front crankshaft seal, cam shaft seals, etc. For some reason, these Boxer engines tend to have oil leaks from the oil seals in front of the engine at a relatively early age, say around 85k miles and up. A common symptom is the smell of burning oil after a hard run or visible smoke (oil burning on the cats).

All parts can be sourced for a decent price on line "Subaru Parts" - "Subaru Accessories" below wholesale. or SubaruParts.com - Your #1 Source for OEM Parts and Accessories. I have a decent discount with Garcia Subaru on Lomas. The parts manager likes Landcruisers evidently!

My resume now includes:

'92 SVX DOHC (timing belt, engine reseal, intake removal for ALL vacuum and water hose replacement)
'95 Legacy SOHC (timing belt, engine reseal)
'99 Forester SOHC (engine and transaxle removal. Head gaskets by me, auto tranny rebuild by others)

So, let me know if you need someone to do this type of work for you.

PM me for more info.

Thanks.

My wife has been wanting a Subaru for some time. A few weeks ago we sold the Camry and bought a 2002 Outback Limited Edition with the H6 engine; which is nice because it is not affected by the known oil leaks like the 4H engine.

Apparently, Subaru knows about the oil leak issue and recommends putting something in the coolant to reduce something or another. Saw it on some Subaru forum.

More importantly, I now have a source for Subaru help. Thanks Ali.

Lastly, more than you ever want to know about Subaru: Subaru Research Site- specs, prices, options, 2010, 2009, 2008...

That's good news, about the oil leak. Subaru does have their own antifreeze and conditioner and as always, there are opinions both ways on that topic.

Anyway, congrats on the recent purchase!

If I didn't have a Land Cruiser I would have another Subaru again. They are great cars. The family has a 2002 Outback, which my sister now has and it was a fun car to have around town. Only two car brands I would own: Toyota & Subaru Period

My first 4 wheel drive was a Subaru. After exploring the California desert in the thing, getting high centered, stuck, not having a low range ... I grew up and bought my first Toyota. It was a 1982 Hilux shortbed. I haven't owned another brand since.

I don't know my older Subi's very well but wasn't there a model that had hi/low or maybe it was 4/2wd and rear height adjustability?

When I was younger, I used to thrash on a GL (i think that's what it was) hatch back quite a bit. My buddy had a Chevy Luv and we used to beat the leaving snot out of those two rigs :D

Your memory serves you correctly. Read about it:
Older Subaru Archives: 1969-1994

The model I had was before the low range option and the adjustable ride height. Still, I did enjoy the car.

My parents had a 1985 Turbo 4X4 sedan with the low range and height adjustment. Damn fun car to drive on or off road.

Mine was gray with a push bar thing on front. 1978 wagon.

I had an 84 GL wagon that had low range as well. Good car that I thrashed without Mercy.

Funny, I had cam shaft seal problems constantly. Replaced a set at 60k and again somewhere north of 100k. Sold it to a friend who did them again before 200K. Definitely a design flaw. Funny it still exists as a problem.

Do you realize that the average age of all your vehicles is 32 years old. That is older than most of the members of HDC and probably 90% of 'Mud.

How in the world are you ever going to get a date if you don't own a vehicle made in this century? Its time for you to buy a new Toyota Jon. Here's a nice one.

That is beside the point that my vehicle is nearly double my age! It is still going and it is a classic. I like the Lexus, but it wouldn't do too well on the trails.

Ooooooo, aaaaaaaaa. Yep, an IS would be nice, very nice. I would even settle for a Solara made this decade. But not on a solo dot-GOV salary. I have a coworker that has been telling me she wants to set me up with a friend of hers. I've heard that for over a year now. She brought it up again today. Said something about a "blind date" which instantly tossed up red flags.

:meh:

Actually, I have to throw in that I had a Subaru hatchback - fwd/4wd, hi/low range. Hatchback #850 in the country. It was like an 81 or so. It was extremely fun to drive fast on dirt roads across the desert in 4wd, but without a *lot* of work it was limited to about 31" tires...
