Actually, I am a charter member of the Colorado Land Cruiser Club. I assisted Steve Smith when he started it way back in 95/96. Mine was the second fj55 in the club and the first to go on any trail rides as a club. I am planning to be at the Rising Sun rally next month. See you there if you are planning to attend.

I'd like to make the Rising Sun rally, but kid #3 is supposed to pop out that weekend, but who knows? Might be there.

kid schmid...you'll have a lifetime with the kid :D

My pig was formally invited to participate in a wedding of a fellow cruiser-head, Ih8mud addict, and good friend. You get a lot of strange looks in this truck, but you really get some looks driving in a tux!

You ever get any heat from the cops for not running a front plate?[/QUOTE]

Actually, I don't. I try not to give law enforcement a reason to give me a second look. I drive like a normal person, my tires stick out of the wheel wells below the limit (barely), my exhaust is quiet, we all know these things don't speed, I run mud flaps, and all my lights are of legal height and the ones that are not, are covered. So far so good. The only two things I know are not legal are the lack of a front plate and the windows are a smidge dark.

I have made some progress trying to get ready for the Rising Sun rally. I had a tinted "brow" put on the windshield so you can't see the wiring in the overhead console anymore. I finally got the check engine light to go out. I will not bore you with the details, but it gets way better gas mileage now. I have the new bracket built for the transfer case end of the traction bar ready for painting and will hopefully have the traction bar ready and installed for the new full float rear axle I had previously installed by the rally.
I have had a leak from the front output flange of the transfer case for some time now. I have replaced the seal several times (with Toyota parts) and have speedi-sleaved the flange but it has all been for nothing, because it is leaking quite heavily. I also had to redrill the driveshaft holes in the stock flange when I added the double cardon long spline driveshaft I built. That put the holes on the outer edge of the flange. I have tried to find a new flange but none of the course spline flanges are big enough to add the larger bolt circle for the double cardon joint. So ... I contacted Georg at Valley Hybrids. He has sent me a fine spline front output shaft, heavier duty nose cone, and fine spline flange already drilled for the double cardon joint. Also the Orion transfer case I have occasionally pops out of high range on heavy decelleration, so Georg also sent me a brand new main shaft and main gear bushing to resolve that problem. So monday the tranfercase comes out and the new parts go in. I am excited to get my worst leak fixed! I can't say enough good things about Georg, what a great guy!
Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

Great progress!
Really bummed I will not be at the Rally this year.
I would like to know what was going on with your CEL and the problems with mileage?

Well, ok. I had a code #11 which is a power intruption on one of the three power inputs to the ecu. Two are constant power and one is switched with the ignition switch and circuit opening relay. I dicovered that the ignition switch on my 73 has an intruption between "on" and "start". It is a small intruption but enough to set this code. I don't think there is anything wrong with the ignition switch, that's just how it is made. Toyota didn't intend for there to be a ecu feed on it. I simply added a switch of my own to power up the ecu. Code is gone. Then I discovered that when a code #11 sets then it will not set any other codes. So after I fixed the #11 I had a code for the second oxygen sensor (#28 if i recall) which I narrowed down to the heater circuit for the second oxygen sensor. I am only running one oxygen sensor since I have an aftermarket header so I have tricked the ecu into thinking it has two by tying the readings together but I somehow did not tie the heater circuits together. So a little wire and the light is out. Runs better and like I said and the gas mileage is also better. When the check engine light is illuminated the ecu does not rely on its input sensor readings but runs on preprogrammed "ideal conditions". Which is not 6500 feet above sea level, so it runs rich due to less oxygen up here. And since we go higher to go four wheeling it only gets worse. It ran ok at high altitude with the check engine light, but now it runs as it was designed. I really like the fuel injection, it runs great, smooth, and it starts really quick all the time reguardless of temperature. Good upgrade and it wasn't very hard to do in my opinion. I even got all the parts for free. I would recommend it.

I am running the 3f computer. The last wheeling trip was about 300 miles with a bit of highway and a bunch of off road and it came out to 11.66 miles per gallon. I was around 14 with the carburator so I think I need to look at timing and such. I know I am way past due on a valve adjustment. Also I am pretty sure I was not running 37 inch boggers when I was getting 14 mpg. On the plus side it was getting around 9 mpg with the check engine light on, so that's good.
I have made some progress this last weekend. I remade my rear brake line. It was leaking at the "T" junction on the rear axle and I didn't like having hardline all the way to the calipers, so I got some stainless steel braded flex lines just like the ones on the front axle and put them in the rear. Made some brackets and welded them to the u-bolt plates and reflared the lines.
I also discovered the exhaust will have to be modified to clear the new rear axle traction bar, so I redesigned it as well. It will be close, but I do believe it will work. I was hoping to have the new traction bar done before the rally, but I don't think I am going to get it done in time.
So when I am at the rally with no traction bar, don't judge me too harshly, it's a work in progress.

I don't think I am doing too bad on mileage. I am terrified to do a compression test, I am sure it is low. I am looking into building a 2f someday.
On another note, I got new carpets for the back. One for the back of the rear seat, one for the cargo area, and one for the top of the tonneau cover. I got them bound around the edges. I helps having a rug man for a father-in-law.

I finally made some progress. I removed the mini-truck power steering set up I was running and installed an FJ60 power steering box I had with a new shock mount. I am currently working on the shock mount for the passenger side also. I still need to paint it up with some POR and go try it all out. So far it is good. I think it turns a bit tighter then the mini-truck and center link would allow, so I am happy. shock mount 1.webp

I made some progress. I have installed the right front scab plate and shock hoop and have painted both front shock hoops with POR15. I also had a small leak between the crawler box and the Orion transfer case. So I pulled the transfer case out and installed a new seal. The driveline is once again leak free. I also finished the track bar and painted it finally.

If all goes well, we will be taking it up to the Rising Sun rally in Lakewood tomorrow.
