I recently acquired a1971 FJ55. It's been sitting for quite a while and I'm trying to get it running. I am having some trouble with the engine. Mainly I think it is seized but I'm not sure of a very good way to check. I put tension on the belt and tried to pull on the fan and nothing moved. I noticed that there is not a nut on the crankshaft pulley. It instead has a fitting for a hand crank, which I don't have. What do I need to do in order to turn the engine over by hand?

Also any advice for this project would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Will

I've had luck with marvel mystery oil before, but I don't think this is really better than any number of other options for some kinda penetrating brew of ATF and solvents... (If I have to do it again, those 4 quarts of MD3 I had for a car that was sold would probably be tried first.)

There should be a hex nut on that piece that has the hand crank fitting.

If you're really determined to break the rust free, or break something else if it doesn't, put it in fourth and pull it a bit. But you'll probably be better off pulling it all apart instead, even if you have to hammer a piston out of the block it's probably going to be less destructive than dragging it around in gear. Soaking it with something first will certainly increase your chances of success, and soaking it for days or weeks isn't unheard of.

(A friend had success putting Coke in the cylinders before...)

X3 remove plugs.
I'd drop in a squirt of diesel myself.
Try and turn with the alternator at a push but yea there should be a big hex - 43mm?.

Or pull the starter motor off (or clutch inspection cover) and very cautiously pry the ring gear.

Make sure it's in neutral obviously.
