Help with Cracked 1F head replacement

So, my 72 has a crack in the water jacket on cylinder 5 valve area (pic). Its casting is 60050. I have an extra rebuilt head with casting 60030 that came off a 1969 engine. Can I replace it with this one? Thx.

You may have a slight loss of compression going from a F155 head back to F145 head. But if your ‘72 bottom end wasnt rebuilt with the F155 in mind, then it may not matter as much.

Do you know if your’72 has the domed pistons?

Thx Mark. The pistons are domed. Heres pic. One can tell how Cylinders 5&6 were affected by the cracked head.

You will have a slight loss of compression with the 60030 head. Also you will lose the end holes where the exhaust bolts up, which is more significant with a header than a stock manifold. And you lose the third mounting boss at the forward end of the passenger side, where the tow hook goes.

So I am now starting to wonder… what engine years did the 60050 head come from? I ask b/c I have 3 extra 1F engines w/ the following heads: 1969 w/ head 60030, mid-1971 w/ 60032, and mid-1973 w/ 60032. What I’m thinking is that the 60050 head was a replacement on my late-1972 engine—ie. Not original to that engine.

Thx for any info u might have. I’m trying to keep my 1972 rig original…

I was going to tag YOU on this, just because you have ready access to the microfiche. Thank you!😊

Unfortunately, the microfiche numbers don’t match the original casting numbers, so we’re still left to my anecdotal observations.

The 60050 should have a third hole under the fourth rocker arm stand, making it an F.5 head.
 
I have a 155F head.

The last time the motor ran was in 1991 and I removed to get the motor to turn over.

Wow thx for all the help! The microfiche is awesome; it coincides with what I’m seeing on the different 1F engines I have. I have a 74 engine at home and will have to see what the head casting is on it. Looks like the head on my 72 got replaced with a 74 head.

So, I’m thinking the original head was a 60032 which I just pulled yesterday off a donor machine. I’ll take it to the shop and have them rebuild this head! Thanks again guys!

Because I just had to know and thanks to the information on head number location from @65swb45, I went out to the garage and grabbed some GUNK and a wire brush. I removed decades of dirt and grease to reveal a number 60032. I am the second owner of a Jan. '72 FJ40 that I bought in Oct. '78. It was last driven and liscenced in early '83 and has been mostly in pieces in covered storage ever since.

Looking up cylinder head online I've numbers do not match the casting. Believe the difference is replacement heads are not sold bare.the cylinder. The part numbers I find includes plug
, bushings and plugs. Does not show a bare head number.

While not as easy to identify there is a date of manufactured on the left side of the head as well.

Block is 60031
Head is 60050 with holes for air injection but they are plugged.
I have no reason to believe it was swapped but unfortunately I can not ask ToolsRUs
I have not had it off to see if the engine has domed pistons.
I believe this was a California truck originally. Is it at all possible there was a California smog issue back then that the 60050 heads went on the F for?

Idk, could be…, I live in MI and we Nvr worried about Cali epa restrictions 😀
