Yea man, buy my parts :)

well after a 3 week break we got back to it today.

Got the rear Ford springs mocked up and tacked in place. Took some time to get everything lined up but I think everything is square. The springs are only held in place temporarily by the Toy shackles, once the front is all installed then the rear springs & shackles will be dialed in to get the right pinion angle and height. We installed the ford springs rear-forward to help with the departure angle, in doing so we moved the front hanger forward about 10" and the rear sporing perch forward about 4 inches. We'll see how this works out for now.

Excuse the cell phone pics:

The shackle angle is not correct in the pic but when the longer shackles go it should correct itself.

As for the front, well let's just say it aint drivin' anywhere.

Always set shackle angles w/ the complete truck weight on the axles or you will be redoing them.

Looks good.

thanks for input, that's pretty much what we did.

To get the location we used a high stand to compress the axle and springs until the rear perch touched the underside of the frame. We pushed the perch just forward of straight up/down to ensure it would compress backward and then tacked the perch in place. Then put the full weight of the truck on the springs to check the shackle angle, they went to about a +/-20* but it's tough to know exactly until the truck is back on the ground and the new shackles are in.

Micheal--short of cutting out the torsion bars is there an easy to remove these? It looks almost like you have to remove the front bumper and radiator and then pull them out the front, is this correct?

I wish I had taken some measurements of the before and after height of the truck but I'm getting a little concerned, it looks like I picked up 4+" of lift

John/Sidney--$700 for a welder knob??? WOW :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: If they priced it by the pound they could cut it into kilos and smuggle it into the country for cheaper. damn.

PLLLEEEEAAAASSSSEEEE----Someone tell me how to fuse a plastic knob back to the broken plastic stub on the face of a welder? :meh::meh: I'll pay you $500 and pocket the balance.

JB Weld!

Ted,

I would try a combination of JB weld, a fine machine nut and bolt to hold it together if you can do that and another option is to go to Ace and check out what appliance repair knobs they have. Without seeing what broke, that is my 2 cents or is it $699.98?

Made some good progress yesterday. got the frame all cleaned up from the IFS junk, that took a couple hours with the grinder and plasthma cutter to get the frame rails cleaned up.

John made the front shackles and the started mocking up the front perches, moved it 2" down and 2" forward from stock but that will probably change.

I cut the hoes through the frame and sleeved the frame to accept the spring bushings shackle bolts, that was a little painful. I Started to drill the frame with a hole saw but couldn't get the proper angle of attack so switched to the plasthma, good choice.

Dave and Josh built the front springs using the my old rear Toy springs and adding in 2 Ford springs, they cut the fords to length and cleaned up for installation. Replaced the spring bolt with new ones tightened down. The spring pack now has 6 springs (4 Toy on top and 2 Ford on bottom) with no overload.

So, at the end of the day we had to see what the Toyrd would look like. rough measurements have the rear about 3 inches higher than the front but won't know until we put it back on the ground.

Looks good Ted, wish I could have been there to lend a hand yesterday. When is the next work day?

Looks good Ted, it was a cold Sat for working on your truck.

Visible progress wasn't very visible this weekend so no new pics. However, we humped it all day Saturday tweaking and dialing in locations of hangers and shackles.

After looking over the truck last weekend the axle looked to be roughly 3-4" forward of stock, this is simply too far. So, this weekend after more research and a fresh set of eyes I concluded the the axle just had to be moved back to a more "normal" location. Overall doing this isn't a big deal especially since the front perch was only clamped on the front cross-member but the shackle location had been cut and sleeved through the frame so that wasn't going to be so simple.

We decided to move the front of the spring back which of course forced us to move the shackles back as well. The distance required to get the location I wanted for the sleeve turned out to be about 3 back from "stock". This put the sleeve directly under the back of the body mount which would have to be cut away to make room. It took 2 1/2 hrs to cut and tack the new holes with the sleeves, then another hour to run out to Ace for longer shackle bolts, Pizza Hut for lunch and Napa for spring bushings. In the end, I'll have to plate the frame over the old holes to restore the frame strength but live and learn I guess. It also Looks like we're going to have to make a couple of bent shackles but that part is easy.

something like this, a pic I stole from Pirate and then photo shopped.
New shackle location.webp

In the front, we got the spring perch cleaned up and gusseted. Tack welded it to the frame and bolted everything in place. The axle now sits about 1.5-2" forward of stock which is about where I wanted it from the beginning. It's really taking shape

Anyway, missed my goal of having the truck back on the ground but that will happen soon enough.

JB Weld will fix damn near anything.

Do 5.29's for sure, they kick ass

:flipoff2: for buying stuff from TG. Marlin, Sky, FROR, Bobby, etc are all acceptable options depending on what you need.

buddy of mine has an FJ80 front axle for sale if you want it, may be too late now.

I know but what can I say, I will consult wit the wheeling gods before I ever do it again, I promise. :flipoff2: If JB fixes anything, where the he!! is your junk, hmmmm?

"too late", well I suppose you could say that. I do still need a drag link though.
