i said damn near anything :D

dont know that I would trust birfield repair to JB weld, though I am sure someone in Alabama has tried it already...

I actually tried to order Master Rebuild Kits from Marlin a while back and they were on a boat somewhere, so I guess I need to call back.

I need to pay dues this weekend too....

just scored 1 set of 5.29 gears from a guy on Pirate for $75. They're Richmond V6 5.29 and he claims that they're new and still in the box. I searched a little for Richmond's reputation on R&P but didn't find much. So, the way I figure it if they suck, I'll resell them to another DA, if they're ok, then maybe i got a steal of a deal. We'll see.

Half work day tomorrow or no Ted?

Good score on the 5.29s.

Not looking good right now, the morning will tell more but unlikely right now. If you have plans don't wait on me. thanks!

I think I just saved myself $699.99. I say it cost me 1 cent only to give a cost to the tiniest drop of superglue you've ever seen.

To fix John's welder knob I drilled and tapped the smallest hole I could make--No further comments needed here please, thank you! :hhmm:

The plastic is enormously soft so after the screw was through the shaft I put a tiny dab of glue of on the threads of the screw just to keep it from backing out. I even counter sunk the head of the screw so it wouldn't interfere with the knob. It threads about 3/16 deep which was about as deep as i dared go, the knob feels pretty solid and should hold pending another hammer falling on it. :bang:

My next project is a very stout cover for the welder so I don't have to do this again!:flipoff2:

What is this week 5 of project Toyrd, dunno but made good progress today.

Finally assembled the front axle, well Josh and Nick did anyway. Once this was done it was time to bolt on some tires so we grabbed Josh's 35s and stuck them on there. Dropped the truck off the lift for the first look. Short version, it's no longer vertically challenged that's for sure.

Now that we knew where the front sat oit was time to level out the truck. We pulled the rear springs and added 2 more leaves to the Ford spring pack, we also ended up with 8.75" eye to eye rear shackles, not bad. As a note to other ford spring swappers out there, the Fords springs are SOFT, I mean really soft which is why we added the 2 additional springs to the pack.

As of now I think the ground to bottom of frame is about 24" and to the top if the front wheel well is almost 44" so you could say there was some lift involved.

After looking at the 35's on there I'm beginning to seriously think 36-37s since clearance doesn't appear to be an issue.

Week 5 003.webp

Still a lot to do but I'm fairly pleased with the overall turnout, a bit high maybe but gonna leave it for now.

impressive, wish my bumper was adding lift to my truck....:)

Looks good...

The frame on my 40 is 24" on 38.5" SXs so you are in the ball park for a SOA rig. At this point you can run about any size tires you want up to ~ 40" w/ some 30 splines Dual Cases and some fender triming. As it sits 36-37s will be a nice fit.

Thanks Michael, always good to get approval from someone who knows what they're doing.

time to get serious about the 5.29s though, just scored a deal on 5x 75-80% tread 35's off craigslist. That means it's now time to sort out my gearing issues. Will--you listening???

I've been looking for new tires all along but this was such a steal I couldn't pass it up. The more I investigated 36"+ tires it became clear my options were limited by the 15" wheel size and adding 17" wheels to the cost was getting enormously expensive.

Speaking about wheels, have you thought about a weld on beadlock kit? How about some tube doors & lose the tailgate when you bob the bed. Lookin real good there leafer :flipoff2:

actually those thoughts have not escaped me. I've run across a few sets of tire/wheel combos with beadlocks and have been very tempted on a few. I've just not found anything remotely local or that had decent tires and were within budget. The best I found was a new set of 37" BFG Baja on 16.5" beadlock wheels for $700, a great deal but they were out near Raleigh and the wheels were 8 lug. frankly, still very tempting if the wheels were just a different size.

already have the tube doors and we'll see what happens with the gate when she's bobbed.

You can buy beadlocks for about as much as you can buy a wheel and DIY kit. So in my opinion DIY locks aren't that good of a deal unless you already have wheels and are a good welder w/ a weekend to spare. I also know a handful of people that have cut tires w/ DIY locks and arent very happy w/ them. ( Wild West Off Road (Powered by CubeCart) )

16.5" wheels suck by the way.

Hey Ted..... I had a similar project in line but I am starting to realize that I do not have the time for it and am getting rid of my stock piled parts for it.

Let me know if you need any of these
Older ARB locker for a 4cylinder toyo 8inch
Front FZJ80 axle
Rear FJ80 axle
22re
complete 2wd 92 parts truck

I saw that, that's too bad as we've been having a blast. I do appreciate it. right now I'm good but I know someone who needs an IFS steering box, not sure if the 2wd is the same as 4wd but if they are is yours available?

Not sure it is the same.

well I knew better than to call it a done deal until the tires were in my hands. Short version, I spoke to the guy last night who said he'd hold them until we could meet this afternoon so we arranged to meet near Per. mall this afternoon. I got there with $ in hand and the guy was nowhere to be found so I called him and he oops, sorry and said another guy was supposed meet me with the tires. Another 10 mins and he called me to tell me "Sorry, someone else had come in the night before and bought them out from under me for $450." Gee, thanks prick for honoring your word and the deal!

Oh well, back to the drawing board as I really wanted 36s or 37s anyway.

16.5" wheels are ok if you want to run military tires etc but in general there are way less tire options w/ a 16.5" wheel than w/ a 15, 16 or 17.

Hummer wheels are way thin so you have to run a rock ring if you are going to beat on them not to mention the 20 something inches of backspacing that they have.
