It's that time of year for the annual pilgrimage out of the South East Regions to a much needed cool down in the San Juans. Those of you planning to travel to Ouray through the Texas Panhandle we have a Convoy of Cruisers that will gather here on my property August 2nd for an evening of food, drink and prep for the journey up. Folks are welcome to camp onsite or get a hotel nearby. We will leave Saturday morning August 3rd and begin our heard of Classic Toyota Awesomeness. There are enough of us driving old rigs with experience that gas stops will be frequent and repairs can be addressed along the way.
For the last several years we have camped on BLM Land just South of the Great SandDunes NP, some of us went over Medanno Pass in route. Then on Sunday we would travel to Classic Cruisers In Poncha Springs for a little stop and lunch then over Monarch Pass on Hwy 50 to Montrose. It is a real cool experience to say the least and has become tradition. This route would involve many extra miles to an already long trip with the convoy.
However, this year one of the main bridges between Gunnison and Black Canyon on the Blue Mesa Reservoir is closed due to structural maintenance. As of this posting the bridge is one lane with timed access via pilot car. They are saying light vehicles, pickups and suvs can cross but no trailers at this time. There is a bypass on maintained dirt available.
This seems like a huge bottleneck for one vehicle let alone a convoy of folks traveling to their destination. We will be avoiding this route for our convoy this year.
There are multiple routes out of Amarillo that will get you to Ouray. I-40 to Albuquerque then HWY 550 North will take you directly to Ouray. Hwy 287 to I-25 will take you to Walsenberg CO. then West on HWY 160 over Lavita Pass to the San Luis Valley is the route the Texas Convoy will be using this year. Once in Alamosa there will be a gas food stop at the City Market shopping center. Those that are towing Cruisers or highway campers will want to contenue on HWY 160 towards Pagosa Springs and Durango. Those up for an adventure can head up Hwy 149 from South Fork and follow the Rio Grande to an area North of Creed for a BLM overnight. On Sunday August 4th we will pack up camp with two options for travel. One is to do Stoney Pass to Silverton wich we did year one with 6 Cruisers. It was extremely rough and took at least 6 hours to complete. Not recommended for novice drivers and or questionable skills. Option two is continue up Hwy 149 over Slumgullion Pass to Lake City then over Cinnimon Pass to Animas Forks. From there on to Silverton or depending on time California Pass, Hurricane Pass then California CorksScrew to Hwy 550. Either route will be a memorable experience, Cinnimon Pass will be the least aggressive approach to Ouray.
If you are planning to attend the Convoy Party and travel with us please respond here and we can have a better idea what to expect once we get to the rough stuff.
Thanks, Casey..

I'd be coming out of Angel Fire, NM and would love to connect when y'all pass by/near/through.
Any idea where you are planning on coming through that neck of the woods?

The closest we will be to Angle Fire will be Alamosa CO. on Saturday late afternoon. Welcome to join in if you can make it.

I will meet up with y'all in Alamosa then. Camping on BLM sounds fun. How rough/gnarly is the Cinnimon Pass route? I may be rolling with a trailer, maybe not. Plus, I'm a sissy when it comes to destroying my 40.

Edit: I just looked it up, sounds like just my speed.

Cinnimon has a few tight swithchbacks but easy with a trailer. Edited: Small high clearance off road type trailer.

I plan to join y’all again this year Casey. See you at your place Friday evening!

Casey,

I'd be interested/tentative as there are some details I need to work out. Mainly timing. As it stands Karl and Chris from MN are staying here (Lincoln Nebraska) Friday night then we are heading out Sat convoying across Nebraska. I would love to peel off and connect Sat evening and do the drive with you all (or is that y'all not being from Tx?) Sunday.

It looks like 11 hours to South Fork where I would take my rig off the trailer and head up 149 & connect and my bother-in-law can just go around and meet in Ouray.

Again - timing/where you would camp and get final details ironed out with Karl too.

I am not experienced - so if the group wants to do the challenging route, no prob, I can cut my teeth and join some other year. Don't want to slow anybody down.

That would great if you can meet us Bryan. Anyone traveling along or near our route is certainly welcome to join in with the convoy. Always better to travel in pairs while driving these old Cruisers cross country. We will know a little better on time for that Saturday depending on the progress of the convoy.
Casey..

I'll be coming from NC and will be stopping in Amarillo Saturday night to stay with my in-laws. I may meet up with you all en-route depending on your timeline as I'll be going from Amarillo to Ouray Sunday in one day.

Heck, maybe I'll leave a day early and get to Amarillo Friday to meet up with you all there. I'm travelling solo the entire trip in my 60 as of now.

There is plenty of room here on the property. All are welcome to join. There will be a few groups of folks traveling at different times and paces on Saturday depending on vehicle speeds and Saturday night destination. We have yet to leave anyone behind out on the road.

Casey, for those that do not want to do the more difficult route on Sunday but have done Medano Pass, would you say the route through Lake city is similar on technical difficulty to that of Medano?

Easy decision :)

I would say that Cinnimon Pass route out of Lake City is very similar to Medanno Pass. Just a little higher Elevation is the main difference.
I will say we aren't married to any particular route at this point. One of our long time Texas Convoy attendees has mentioned doing Medanno on Saturday if time allows. This would be entirely up to those in the Convoy and we can certainly discuss possibilities that Friday night here at the shop over a few beers.

In case you missed it on the Official SAS 8 thread, here are the current conditions on the Blue Mesa Bridge on CO. HWY 50.

Howdy Casey,

Reckon I’ll be hitchin' up and joinin’ the convoy in Amarillo. Keep yer boots dusty and the coffee hot till I git there.

Your trusty sidekick,
Cornboy

Easy decision :)

Changed around my plans to leave Thursday so I should get into Amarillo Friday evening now! Will swing by Casey's and join the convoy.

We have some exciting news for this years Texas Convoy. As usual we will be heading over Raton Pass on I-25 as we enter Colorado. Trinidad is a good place to grab lunch, fuel and supplies for camp on Saturday night. This year however, we have been invited to stop at Phil Long Toyota in the downtown district. They will clear most of their lot and provide some Burgers and such for the group. They have reached out to us and realized what a cool thing we do and recognize the haritage of our Cruisers. This is a first and a big shout out to @CaptClose for putting the bug in their ear for us.
So grub on the road and a cool location. Much better than the Wal-Mart parking lot I'd say.
