i just got done wire wheeling a housing but want to get it all, nooks, crannies backing plates.
any negative effects to s/bing?
axle bearings will be replaced afterwards.
and i'm able to use two diff covers to close it up for the most part.
plus i'll do a good flush of the tube before assembly.

thoughts please

jim :)

sorry if it's not so "hardcore" ;)

If you are going to have them powder coated they should be hot tanked to remove all oil from the metal so powder will adhere.

Do it, I did mine.

no powder coating.
just cleaning them up nice and perrrrdy :D

Blast it.

Then clean it really well.

Then clean it some more.

Then when you think you are done, clean it some more.

Just make sure you do not leave any of that abrasive in the housing if it gets in there...as it will raise all sorts of hell with bearings.

If the axles are out of the housing, I would put a rag into the axle end, and duct tape the hole closed.

Good luck!

bolt the third, cover, knuckles and spindles back on like a rebuild and seal everything tight before blasting. Cleaning the sand in a greasy gunky housing will be a pita.

great advise as always

steve, what do you use to clean the housing? and are you talking bout cleaning the inside or outside or both.
i'm loading up on brake cleaner today and will use a broom handle and red rags to push thru the inside of the housing.

thinking brake clean the outside first then a real good mineral spirit wipe down.
nice coat ot two of primer then enamal finish.

any reason not to blast the diff housing? just seal it up real good and go!
carrier's out of it at this point, but the pinoins still in it.

one more Q.

this is a 60 axle goin in my 40.
any reason why NOT to truss it?

thanx
jim

take the pinion out.

Take EVERYTHING out and blast it, then follow Posers advice.

And AL oxide seems to work the best for cleaning paint up.

but i don't wanna take the pinion out :crybaby:

then don't sandblast.

Too much of a possibility of getting sand into the bearings..

probably right, maybe i'll just wire brush it real well, wipe it down and pretty it up.

thats what I did..

Then a coat of hammerite..
Thick ass coat too..

IMO not worth the trouble...

Use something like POR or zero rust if you are really that concerned about the small tight areas...

feaking gorgeous.

I'll take pics on Sun and post them..

Gott head to phoenix this weekend.

My D60 got the brush on treatment. worked great too. That crap is super hard to remove tho..

Black.
