I installed the Carb on the intake. I still need to install the little sight glass screw. I also swapped the diaphragm in from the old carb as it did not have a tear. I think I am going to order another one though. question.. does it matter witch side the fuel return line goes? I am planning on not using a return line and just capping it off. I also am pretty sure I have some linkage backwards and I need to correct that. the insulator was trash and broken. so I cut it off. I will get another one if necessary? I think I need a spring for the linkage as well. any one place to get that?

I got my carb linkage parts from @ToyotaMatt Vintage Teq parts. I started yesterday replacing my manifold gasket and will replace the carb linkages while they are removed.

I should have said the linkages on the carburetor. I took them off when I took the carb apart.

I actually have a mechanical throttle linkage. that a mud member earlier in had posted and I bought. I will say I didn't realize my mechanical linkage for the SBC was kinda welded together using oem linkage parts and metal parts...It made me think it was more OEM than it was. its pretty janky to be honest. and originally mine was a cable linkage. I am trying to decide If I still want to use these mechanical throttle linkage parts and or find cable linkage parts. I kinda jumped the gun and bought the mechanical parts instead of cable. again I still think I can make it work though.

Has anyone used one of these clutch kits from Fleebay? its a good price. I am thinking I am going to go for the city racer one but this one is tempting.

I understand the temptation here as well as budgetary concerns that tend to spiral. It is difficult to discern when to stray away from OEM for a less expensive alternative. But my unsolicited 2 cents here: For about $70 more, you can get the Aisin Clutch kit. While the Ebay kit might be fine, in my humble opinion, factors that weigh in favor of not skimping include the known vs unknown; and the amount of time/difficulty in having to replace if there is a premature failure.

Thanks thats all I needed. I think I am just going to go for the city racer one. I think its 190$ with tax and its a Aisin branded one. I already have the flywheel thats been resurfaced. I bought it back in the summer I threw some grease on it to keep it from rusting (ill clean off before I install the clutch) but I really have not even looked at it.

I'm cosigning this all day long. the devil you know.

The clutch in my FJ60 is an Autozone clutch. The diaphragm and clutch disc are both stamped teq, even though they came in a duralast box. I think cityracer was out of stock when I ordered it? (Or cruiser outfitted, can’t remember). Either way, price was about the same and I would’ve ordered from them but I was on limited time. Just another option if you need it.

Bell housing is different for a three speed. Keep that in mind. Don’t forget I have another four speed hanging out. You got the better one as I wasn’t fond of reverse in the one I have left. Two into one or four into one has been my curated approach to this nonsense of frankensteining my rig.

My header came in yesterday and I had a few hours I could work on it. so I wire wheeled and rust converted. then I sprayed it with Eastwoods manifold header paint.it Turned out pretty nice. Its not amazing but not the worst. at the very least it should protect it from rust. I am planning on doing another coat today and then installing it on Friday.

thats good to know! thanks. I think City racer is in stock however I suspect he orders it through a third party or somthing. It says don't order other things at the same time if you are wording a clutch.

I have a 3speed bell housing too. No worries there. I am pretty sure the 4 transmission could have been slapped in and I could have run it as is but it had a lot of caked on grease and dirt so I figured I would at the very least re seal it. then I felt one bearing had more play in it than I would have liked so It was classic going down the rabbit hole.

Nice! I was contemplating painting my headers while I have them apart for the new gasket. I’ll see if I can get some of the eastwoods paint locally. I really like that silver color.

It’s not a matter of “if” it’s a matter of “when”. You might as well slip the surly bonds of rational decision making and enjoy the ride. Come on down, all your friends are here…🙃

I've searched and didn't stumble upon an answer: Do you know if your existing parking brake cable will work with the "new" 4-speed. It is my understanding that going from a 3-speed to a 4, moves the parking brake drum rearward 6-8".

Thats a great question. I think the 4speed cable is on there still however moving it around in the garage I have not been too kind to the cable. I will find out I can guarantee it.

I do know of this issue as I will need to buy some drive shafts or have my existing ones leinthend. I had some issues with this when I did my suspension actually. I think I am going to just buy new ones from tom woods or somthing. The ones on it have dents and I can't imagine them being very well balanced.

I think its worth it just to keep them from rusting. Especially here at the beach. I am excited to hear this thing with the headers. This is what I used Eastwood Silver Hi-Temp Coating - https://www.eastwood.com/silver-hi-temp-coating.html

Eloquently said! I have slipped down the rabbit hole but I am glad every one is here watching and helping.

We don't live anywhere close to a driveline shop. So, Tom Woods is my plan as well.

same for me. the worst part about this build (knock on wood) I think will be the muffler. the closest muffler shop is 5 hours away! Going to trailer it I think haha.

My parking brake cable worked with the 4 speed swap. It doesn’t have much slack but not tight enough that I’m concerned about it.

I am having spark issues. I can't seem to get spark to the points. I am going do some of the checks mentioned in this thread tomorrow. Wits' end with no spark (really long post) '76 FJ40 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/wits-end-with-no-spark-really-long-post-76-fj40.951535/

Funny enough I spent half the day with my Dad and a 2018 Silverado that he just bought... I wish he had brought me to get it. as soon as he got it home it would not crank back up. It also has a suspicious oil leak... its in really good shape other than those two things though... we changed the battery and still this issue. I think it could be a bad starter or a bad ground somewhere. That truck makes me happy the fj40 is so simple.

Anyways back to my engine: some thoughts I need to check myself on: The coil I bought has an internal resistor. so no need for a ballast resistor correct? The ignition 12 volt to the coil + is constant correct and then another wire from the starter solenoid to the + is only when starting correct? the - from the coil goes to the dizzy correct?

Good news is the starter seems to work well. Tested the starter a lot today.

Also If I wanted to go pertronix witch Pertronix kit will work with the city racer distributer 19100-61180? It says city racers site that the pertronix 1662LS is there another model of patroix that will work?
