Nice score. Can't wait to see what's in store with your "new" engine, trans and T-Case. Should be a fun and rewarding project.
I already know a few things that will be interesting. The water pump bolts I am hoping are just not installed... but a few bolts are missing. I think one or two are installed. at least it wont be in the engine bay when I am removing the water pump. I think the first thing i am going to do is degrease. Then probably separate the trans from the engine to get it on the engine stand. Then pull the small things like the carb and dizzy, valve/ pushrod covers. The crank pully might be difficult to get off.

Yeah worked out perfectly and my thoughts exactly! We actually go to the sweet donkey every time we are up here. We went there yesterday actually saw a nice fj62 drive by while sitting out front of the coffee shop. Are you from Roanoke? I would say lets meet up but we are heading out this morning to go to my family in Burlington NC. then back to Ocracoke on the 26th. If anybody sees a red regular cab silverado with a 2f in the back driving down the road its me.
Sort of, I live in Lynchburg but I'm in Roanoke every weekend or so. I was there today for some Christmas festivities . If the 62 was gray I'm pretty sure it lives in the neighborhood behind the coffee shop as I see it semi regularly .

Missing water pump bolts could be from the brackets that use them for air pump? Anyhow, good find!

You won’t regret the 4 on the tree….

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope your December 25th has been fantastic. Christmas has been good for me. My family got alot of land cruiser things to keep me busy. I got the retrosound radio to mount under the dash, a fiber glass "land cruiser" stamped bezel, the SOR speeker holders and some kenwood speekers. and my wife got me a really nice milwalkee m18 die grinder.

yeah I am hoping the water pump wont be too bad. I need to get a oil cooler too... I guess I could set it up with out the oil cooler but I think that would be unwise.

Yeah I think now that I have a 4 speed I might as well install it. it shifts in all the gears but I am still going to pull the cover and inspect everything. 4 speed will probably change the drivability too. I could probably take it off the island on a trip haha.

The Trooper has been with us for awhile. It’s my sons first vehicle and he loves it so much. He has moved away and it gets driven a couple times a week to keep it fresh.

Well I got the engine out of the back of the truck. and then started going to town on it. I pulled the transmission, bell housing, clutch component. Then I got it on an engine stand. I pulled of the intake and carb, pulled the distributer, pulled the thermostat housing. I broke only a hand full of bolts witch I think is a win.

Good and bad news.
Good - the water pump was easier to get off than I thought. the valve train looks good and seems to be actually pretty close to in spec with my feeler gages. motor seems to be good no signs of water damage or issues.
Bad - the thermostat housing might me junk broke both top bolts off. but managed to get it off the block. (block side bolts came out). The distributer looks to be junk. Looked like sombody pored salt water in it. Just completely rusty in there when I took the cap off. Ill post a pic to see what you all think. The carb might need to be replaced. but I might try and rebuild it. lots of gummed up parts on it.

I will post more tomorow about it.

Make sure the vacuum hose is hooked up to the new distributor. Moisture definitely likes that area.

Where did you source the stamped bezel?

I got it as a gift but I think it came from landcruiser specialties. Its a fiber glass one. Not my favorite thing but I think I can make it look nice. but if not it might be a wall hanger (expensive wall hanger)
Where did you source the stamped bezel?

Some questions about engine manufacture date. Correct me if I am wrong but is this engine from 1980? or is it 1978?

I love those old troopers. A friend of mine has one here. although its a rust bucket beach car. I have done alot of repairs on it for my buddy. he cant camplain though. it flooded up to the windows during a hurricane in salt water and we just changed fluids and replaced the computer and it works fine.

June 1 ‘78

If you can find a good used distributor, that’s an option, otherwise a new one from city racer.

the format is Y MM DD

so 8 06 01 - June 1, 1978 - ( 3f was introduced in the US in 88) -

If the pistons are domed - totally a '78
Pistons are domed. I just pulled the head. Lots of carbon build up on the pistons.

Also i pulled the carburetor apart. but I beleive It may be beyond rebuilding. Ill post some pictures and see what you guys think this afternoon. I may end up buying a used one somewhere and rebuilding it. I would like to find one with a manual choke. can anybody school me on the carbs you can put on a 2f manifold?

Happy new year everyone! 2024! I cant believe it. anyways here is some pictures f the carborator. The float bowl was filled with white crusty stuff and rust so much I actually poured it out. the float seemed to be fine at least. The bottom two butterflys are seized. Thinking of soaking it in diesel. But I am unsure if its worth it. what do you all think? would it be worth sending it to someone?

Just caught up reading this:

1. Ditch the oil cooler. Your biggest issue 90% of the year will be getting the oil up to temperature. Oil coolers only help with tow rigs. I'd highly recommend getting a non-oil cooler thermostat housing as conversion kits like the one @ToyotaMatt sells work great, you want the extra room at the front of the engine to work on the fan blade/belt and alternator.

2. I'd clean up that carb and throw a rebuild kit at it and see if you can make it work. Otherwise, there are folks on here that rebuild carbs, though the names dont occur to me off hand. BTW, the white crusty stuff is lead. Don't expose your skin or lungs to it if possible. Edit Jim C. is a known rebuilder.

3. Valves are a booger, and it's more technique than tool. I used the overhead screw style, but it took extensive fiddling to make it work on a 2F. Basically, one arm on the compressor is longer than the other, and I put that on the lower part of the spring coil where it would fit easily, and then turned the entire tool until it got as far down on the spring as it would go, THEN I would turn the wheel on the tool to compress. Expect it to slip off several times in the process. Warm up by practicing some cuss words. It helps.
