I bought some hardware from overland metric. Thanks @Green Bean for that info . I am starting my steering gear box project today after I take my wife to work. I have a two day break from work. I will be Converting everything back to manual steering. Wish me luck. Ill post pictures of the journey as I go.

Love me some Overland Metric. I decided to just buy the complete kit after struggling with almost every nut and bolt on my 40. I’d estimate it’s got over 80% new hardware from them throughout at this point. Good stuff and it looks great!

I just looked this up.. it’s much cheaper than I imagined.

Adding To the get list

The manual box is tight in there with the V8 but it looks and feels so much better. I still need to adjust everything and put the cotter pins in everything. But just moving the 40 in the yard it feels a-lot better and actually less play. Ill post a picture of how it sits in the engine bay this afternoon when I get back to it. I still need to plug my turnsignal switch too. Ill also get some pictures of the (saying it kindly) Trash parts to make it power steering.

I took these photos last weekend before I started my steering box project. I took them on a Rolleiflex 3.5 75mm planar camera with some portra film. They turned out amazing!

just for you all to see how bad the power steering conversion was on the fj40, here are the parts I took out. the picture below is how the steering column was being held up. A nice back yard job.

Thank goodness this is all out of the cruiser and a nice old school manual box is installed. I have to do some more adjusting to get the steering play out but I like how it drives with this. Please excuse the mess of break lines and plug wires. I had to move a bunch of stuff to fit the box and I need to organize it again.

It's funny, I am envious of your original spring green paint and I've got the original drive train and steering in mine. With all of this work you're doing to go back original I'm inspired to get to work on removing the crapping white paint job covering my original spring green paint.

Spring green was never on my radar when I started looking for a 40 but I do love it! Its pretty unique and I wont ever repaint it anything but spring green. (trying to keep that patina as long as i can) I will say one of my favorite colors other than spring green on the 40s is the rustic green.

I got some hardware in from overland metric this afternoon! I cant wait to replace some of these nuts and bolts. One day I might buy their whole kit. Not much really to up date on the fj40. I really just need to save some money for some big ticket items like the soft top, engine, and suspension. I am actually loving the manual steering though. I guess because its more directly connected to the frame I feel the vibrations from the road more in the wheel and it actually seems way more sturdy more tank like maybe? .

I do have an update on my fj45 RC car though. I was driving lt like a mad man and was off roading on some pillows and drove it off the couch and broke an axle. Landed weird. but I bought the parts to fix it hahah. right now its only 3wd. amazing how quickly it gets stuck on the beach in 3wd.

@Cruiser Cult I made a purchase from you! 1963-1968 FJ40 tail light protective cones - https://cruiser-cult.myshopify.com/products/1963-1968-fj40-tail-light-protective-cones and made a SOR purchase. I bought the early tail light cones and tail light brackets for the fj40! as you all know I like originally and I actually found some oem early tail lights a few months ago. I think I have some later bigger ones on the salt wagon right now. my driver side break light is getting to where its not working all the time. I am hoping its bad wiring in the tail light. But I guess maybe its a break switch not working correctly.

Looks like the dude is shooting with a Mamiya 6 or 7? Hard to tell by the resolution. I have a 7ii paired with the 43mm and it is an amazing piece of kit.

Dude, we could rap for hours about cameras and stuff.

Check this video done about me and a project I did a few years back:

I still use 8x10, 4x5 and 6x17 for work quite a bit.
