Rust Issues

Ok, Back to this...I was out riding last weekend at the MS150 which was good fun. Here's a cool pic:

Ok, here's the status of my front door. I did do some more fiberglass work this week in between more cycling action. I think I will get it mostly completed today and get started on the back door.

I did some more fiberglass action on the rear pass door yesterday and today. I'm still working on the front door trying to get it smoothed out.

I started poking around with a screwdriver and the grinder on the rocker panels...not much left over...man, I hate rust.

I'm surprised some entreprenurial type hasn't started making fiberglass repro parts for these things yet?

Save weight=added fuel economy, easy to repair when dinged on a trail, and NO RUST

God I wish I were better at that sort of thing!

Sidenote: what bike do you ride? I've been getting into cycling via my Trek 1.5 triple and I really want to start enterting races next season.

Elliot, I have an old steel Colnago from the 70's with newer campy components and mavic wheels. This was the first long ride I did on it and it was pleasant. The steel is pretty forgiving.

Off Duty, Yeah, would be cool if someone had replacement carbon fiber or fiberglass parts for the 60...maybe I should start taking orders...anyone need a fiberglass fender or something?

Not my thread but here's my progress so far..... wire-wheeled, acid etched and wet sanded ready for zero rust tomorrow. Other than the bottom of the PS quarter panel, there isn't much empty space to bridge.... Need to get an undercoating gun and track down some more bedliner to do the lower half of the truck..

After all the new little bumps that showed up from the long weekend trip, I fixing her right is an unsustainable idea anyway. I'll have to add a can of spray liner and a can of tremclad to my wheeling kit.

I have been working on this slowly ( in between cycling). I have the front pass door now complete and the rear pass almost done...just some more sanding to do...then onto the drivers side, grrrr.

I rode in the Sunflower Revolution 100k (62mi) yesterday and finished platinum with a time of 2:39:55...man it was fast!!

I've been following the work you've been doing and went ahead and started some fiberglass patching of some of the areas on mine to see how it turns out. I'm definitely glad you posted up about using it because it's turning out pretty good for the smaller spots. I've got some big ones that are probably going to have to be done with patches and welded in place, but for the smaller stuff it is working out great so far.

Not sure what the game plan is for the rockers yet, but here's the status of the doors:



I actually started working on the tailgate. I ended up welding in some 1/4 x 1 bar which turned out pretty nice.



will smooth out the bondo later today or tomorrow.

Yeah, the glassing does work well for the smaller holes. I just don't like waiting for the stuff to cure. Welding does go much quicker. What spots are you working on?

Since the photos, I've just gone over the spots with Zero Rust. Planning on just some glassing and then bedliner, may get the glassing going this afternoon. I'd love to learn to weld sometime, but I don't have the time or money to put into it now, and there aren't many real bad spots on my truck, just the bottom of the PS quarter panel.

How about cutting out the rockers and replacing them with some square tubing rocker/sliders?

rivet gun sheet metal...cut out the rusted metal area ... rivet or tack weld,, seal... and u are good for some years...that what u did there may not hold out very long esp....i used the U pol fibre glass resin to sand...its hard as hell....

Treating the inside adequately is also important. Spray in Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer followed by white lithium grease. Bondo with fiberglass fibers built in, gorilla hair, is very strong. Finish with finishing filler you buy at a body repair supply shop, very easy to sand and shape. Prime well to see imperfections, sand again, and reprime. Then sand again and finish. You'd be surprised at the blended results you can achieve. Try Auto Touch Up Paint in Louisiana. Mixed to your color code. 19.95 for 12oz. spray can. Equal amount of clear coat less than 10. per 12 oz.can. Polish with their blue rubbing compound. Pretty good results. Helpful web site. Helpful folks. I know this 2 cents may not sit well with the folks who carry a magnet.

I just chopped my rockers off and welded 2x4 and 2x2 square tubing to make sliders I add 1 1/2 round kickers .... I love the looks and the clearance

well, that looks pretty cool Kling-on. Looks like you chopped the lower section off of the fender and opened up the wheel-wells also. Thanks for the inspiration.

Ok, so I got some blue paint from the store...not a perfect match, but it's all good.

Man, now I have to start on the other side. Fortunately there is less to do on the drivers side.
