Yeah, I need as much guidance on this as possible. Thanks for the input.

I'm only hoping to get a couple years of winter/trail beater use out of mine before the rust (and body damage :hillbilly:) render it five kinds of ugly. For me, the ultimate rust solution is sitting in central California waiting to be towed back from S'nT in November. :grinpimp:

cool, thanks for the links Wile. Did you see the rust converter products...that looks pretty cool.

RockDock, I hear you on that. The reality is that there is rust in every nook on the truck and eventually it'll just be toast.

The main thing I need to do is cut out almost the entire rear quarter and make it all new. Should be a fun project.

And that's only one spot.

Ok, I got some Naval Jelly and CLR from Lowes and some Evapo-Rust from A-zone...I'm going to attack this rust will full force tonight...stay tuned!!

Man pcperks, that's some serious rust...and I thought I had it bad.

Ok, so I did some more grinding and applied some naval jelly, did a little wire brush action to get it deep into the pits, wiped it off after 10 minutes and cleaned it up with some acetone.

I'm going to put some anti rust primer on it now. I may remove some more material in the second hole area before doing any glassing.

Kudos for attempting the door repair. I'd much rather replace then try to repair all of that, so good work!

I've got plenty of the rust on my truck as well. I didn't think it was too bad, but then I took out the carpet, and I've got rust in areas I didn't think you could get rust. Balls I hate salt.

Yeah, rust really sux. I managed to get the primer on last night but went out cycling tonight and haven't worked on it...I'm doing the MS150 this weekend so I had to meet up with the club tonight before the big ride this weekend. It's going to be 150 miles over two days...a little nervous.

Want to see my rust issues? To bad:
These are on the frame in the rear:

Yeah gabbo, I had a section on the drivers side like that. I cut it out and welded in some new material mainly at the support for the exhaust.

Doesn't seem like it would be too difficult, just all the work in moving the brake lines and the exhaust out of the way.

your shock mount cross member looks better than mine. It failed over xmas when I went on a long trip. I had to get it welded up at the connection right at the frame. At some point I may have to make a new cross member. I have the material to do it, just haven't yet. My arc welder works fine for the larger frame repair, but I don't have a mig welder for this body stuff....hmmm perhaps there is a good mig welder deal on craigslist.

OMG You guys are scaring me. I just bought my 62 and I dont have near as much rust but I am taking it straight to the body shop before I do!!!! How do you tell if the frame is shot? Are there thing to look for? I am new in the game!! Also I saw this Pic on this site. Can any one give me info on the REAR bumper, sliders and the roof rack? Who evers truck this is, I am in love with it!! Not really... But it is SWEEEET!! Thanks!!

bruiser69, what does your truck look like? I could imagine that you would see some small amount of salt in your area...my parents live in Libertytown!!

I did some more arts and crafts tonight. I cut some more rotten material out before glassing the second large hole. I started the bondo work on the corner. The fiberglass behind it is real solid...it has become one with the door.

Welcome to the club...

I did this about a year ago - therefore, it made it through a Minnesota winter without too much trouble. The only place it peeled off was where I didn't sand down far enough and the clear coat peeled off the paint. I ground into the rust with a disc sander. In some areas I used those 3M sanding blocks.

The area behind the wheel had about a 5x5 hole there. I built up support with wood to give the fiberglass something to stick to. Otherwise it just sags down.

I built up the area behind the wheel with 2x4's and other scraps of wood.

This area was also built up with wood and then bondo before covering with fiberglass.

If I can get to it I'll work on the doors this fall.

wow man, no bodo action to make it look like it's supposed to?

No, this was more of a utilitarian project. There's too much rust damage spread around to justify making it look right, so I was concentrating mostly on filling in the holes.

The main reason I started was that the rear wheel well rusted out enough that water was getting sprayed into the wire harness and back storage area, then one thing led to another, so I worked on most of the fenders.

These days models like this in good condition are cheap enough that if there's a lot of damage, starting fresh might be worth while.

Besides, I kind of like the "scary" look.

I'm pretty sure that's Esh's truck. do a search for posts from him and rear bumper maybe. That looks like the one from his molded vinyl thread.
