Adam, thanks for the links. my internet sucks here so the search button is pretty useless.

If Adam and I decide to ride together then I would assume the drive would be shorter due to driving shifts. Is it a long haul? yes, but I dont think I need 5 days to get there, especially with a nother driver.

Adam, if the crockpot is ready we need to figure out a way to haul both. I dont forsee my truck having any issues pulling both of our rigs. My trailer is brand new but too short to fit 2 40s though.

Mike if I can swing it I will ride with you to moab like johnny did this year and help you out with the cost of the trip- (dont hold your breath for that one but I will try my hardest to swing it)

Glad you guys are interested in Rubithon 2013. It should be a blast.

Regarding the timing, I can offer some perspective. Realistically it is a 5 day drive out here, and 5 home @ 600-700 miles per day. Particularly in a Land Cruiser. So that only leaves 4 for the run. The runs are going to be on Tuesday (wagon run and at least 1 other) and Wednesday (others) and the exit is Saturday/Sunday, that does not quite leave enough time to do it. Plus you need to account for mechanical mishaps, unforseen repairs and driver fatigue.

Anyway, if time is a problem, the idea of shipping the trucks and flying out is a good one. If I can help by picking up people at the Sacramento airport on Sunday, I will. I might even be able to put up several of you guys if that's needed on Sunday night, as long as you don't mind sleeping on the floor. If you choose the wagon run, I'll be rolling out on Monday afternoon and camp at Loon Lake right at the start, and obviously, you'd be welcome to camp out and prepare for the next day.

Anyway, posting here to subscribe to your thread, which I will also forward to my brother who lives in Charlotte and may be coming out as well. If he does, he'll be driving my 40 on the wagon run, as his 200 is too nice to bash up on the trail, and his daughter has appropriated his 80.

 <<<you'll be in Norcal where the wine is spectacular-don't miss it

Thanks for posting up Drew!

So what is your opinion. Since you've been to both Rubithon and Moab, should we focus on Moab or Rubithon for 2013? Is Rubithon worth the extra 15 hours of driving over Moab?

Didn't we get back to your place on Tuesday?

Yes. Breakdown. Left on a friday arrived sunday (3). In moab monday to saturday (6). Left moab sunday got back tuesday (3).

Del, in my experience towing approximately 6k lbs of truck and gear plus a 2.5k trailer on a long haul across the country, I wouldnt go much more weight than that. That is, if you want to make it there and back without engine or transmission failure. I'd set a weight cap at 10k for gear and trailer. How much does a 40 weight? Additionally, higher elevation kills the horsepower that you are used to.

They are both great trips but about as different as things can be.

Moab is a base with day runs. Rubicon is a full commitment. You start the trail, camp along the way, and you need to be fairly self sufficient. There is no place to get more gas, or shop or get ice. The traction isn't as good as Moab, and the boulders are bigger and move around.

Since the future of the Rubicon trail is uncertain, and Tony wants to make the 25th Rubithon a big deal, and you've seen what Moab has to offer, Rubicon would seem to be the move to make. It is another 1000 miles past Moab though.

If I had 2 weeks, I'd ship the trucks, spend 4-5 days on the Rubicon and another week travelling around Northern California. Alternatively, Ship the trucks 1 way to save the travel time, and drive home via Moab. That could fit in your time frame. No matter how you slice things, a 6000 mile round trip is a long way to drive, especially when powered by a 2F. I have made it from my house to Moab in 1 day, but its like 14 hours and that's in my 80 series.

As it stands right now i am out. Had a vet bill that has bitten me hard. Pretty much the price of a nother cruiser for me. So unless i can find a way to get some more work in my shop ( more hours in a day also btw ) cause i have the work, i have to bow out.

I hope it changes, but i do not forsee it.

So, by another cruiser, do you mean a $500 parts truck or a $5000 needs minor work kind of cruiser. You seem to keep finding these cheap deals that I can't find. We have plenty of time till the trip so don't throw in the towel yet. We can figure this thing out. And I know you want to do a lot to the 40 before the trip but you really can get by this time without all the mods. Just fix the steering is all.

Just put that other box on today matter o fact. Just in time for this weekend.

So, the January beach vacation we had hoped to take is getting put off until 2014. Sarah actually suggested, and has researched, a small house in Moab for a week in June 2013. I'm not sure if she actually knows this event if going on (but I think it plays into her plan) or if she is just digging the idea of a trip out that way.

We would NOT be taking a vehicle with us - plane, rental car, house, reverse - so I won't be hitting the trails behind a wheel but we'd love to tag along with somebody for a day if possible. A donation to the cause will definitely be offered.

I'm not asking anything from anybody yet since this is still in the idea process but feel free to offer up any thoughts, opinions or advice.

The event is the first weekend in May I believe. I have decided to postpone my cross country trip for 2013 and get things ready for 2014. I'm gonna tray to do some events closer to home for 2013 and give Burt some good testing before climbing up the sheer walls of Moab.

Like the loose volkswagen size boulders of Cali are any less technical. Shah.

 Seriously. I practically sharded when that happened. That damn thing would have killed 4 people!

I'm starting to think that 2014 is a good goal for me as well. I am not sure that 5 winter months is enough to test the modifications that are coming to Moonshine in the next few months.

Sad to say but probably best for me also. Esp with me trying to go to school next year in time to use not loose my GI bill.

 Whoops. I confused Rubithon with Moab again. Anyway, Moab is where she's thinking. Thoughts?

Moab is definitely a place you should visit and there is a lot to see besides off road trails, but June might be pushing it depending on the current weather there. In the middle of the day it can get really hot, even in the early summer. I'd recommend making a nice short visit to Moab, then running into the nearby Colorado mountains for the remainder of the trip. Events in Moab are typically in the spring and fall.

.

So anybody still heading to Rubithon 25??? Looks like this thread needs a little pick me up!!!! I rode in with the Pacific Mountain Cruisers in 2010----Yes we were the crew that broke thru the snow pack. I must say-The Views go on forever!!!! I'm planning to get back for the 25th!!!!
